Ebay again..sorry

Hi

I am looking to hire a caravan and have found the ideal one.

I have communicated with the seller and have agreed the price etc.

He has now messaged me to say he wants me to pay using Paypal but to send him my mobile number so he can send me his Paypal email address.

He also says that he wants me to mark it 'family and friends' to
avoid paying extra charges. This rang alarm bells for me, maybe I am just being cynical but I don't know what to do.

Am I just being over suspicious here or does this sound okay.

I would not pay that way.

As said he should have a paypal registered with ebay.

Plenty more caravans around, rather than risk losing out.

Sounds like he is bypassing eBay to avoid all the eBay and PayPal fees. Has he asked for the payment via PayPal to be sent has a gift payment. Gift payments are fee free but you don't get any protection tho

Thats what I am worried about. He just said to mark it for family and friends to avoid extra charges. To me this means a transacton outside of ebay and therefore no protection.

The caravan is priced for a week and we only required a few days so I cannot do BIN in the usual way.

Why should you save him money at your risk?

Is he offering you a discount then seen as he is saving a fair few bob. If you did what he is saying will he put it all on a booking form and and provide receipts so you have proof.

If not tell him no thanks either say I will go through eBay or find another caravan

I think people have missed the fact that this is about caravan hire - in which case I'm not sure there is any buyer protection from Paypal? I thought their protection was pretty much limited to stuff you buy and get posted to you. If you were paying via any other method you wouldn't get special protection either - one party either has to trust the other or you pay face-to-face.

Suppose it depends how much you are talking about OP hasn't mentioned it. Suppose if he is genuine caravan hirer it's not in his interest to con people. In that case wouldn't it then be a trade standards issue.

Not sure on the PayPal rules regarding there buyer protection programme so above poster could be right.

    Hi

The total cost is £160 including damage deposit, so not a huge amount but one I cannot afford to lose. Also, I would hate to drive all the way there and have nowhere to stay.

I have checked feedback and there are 2 for this caravan. One glowing and one saying 'not as described' which is another worry.

He's asked for your number because ebay block email addresses in their messages to stop people avoiding fees (like this!). He's also asked for it as a gift payment to avoid PayPal fees.

To be honest it doesn't make much of a difference to you as PayPal class holidays/rentals as "intangible" so you wouldn't be covered by buyer protection anyway. So in your case there really isn't much difference in paying by paypal through ebay checkout, PayPal gift payment or bank transfer. I'd make the decision based on the sellers attitude and feedback. Or pay a bit more and go through established company if you don't want to take the risk.

Edited to add - would he consider cash on pick-up? At least then if it turns out to be rubbish you've only lost your time, not your money too!

I'd be wondering why he needed your number to send the email address to you, why not send it to you via Ebay Messaging or your email address?

You could always offer to pay by cheque. That way at least you've verified his name and address if you ever had to put in a claim.

No time, we go on Saturday and we still need to get the keys.

He seems ok, he has 3 caravans in total and the other 2 are booked. He also has 100% feedback. One person has put item not as described referring to the caravan back in August 2012 but has still given positive feedback.

Should I email this person and ask what was not as described or is that not the done thing.

How long have they done this? I can recall two occasions where someone sent me their email address (once due to them cocking up the paypal payment address and then sending me the right one; the other time where the seller sent the wrong item and I had to send him pictures of the item sent!). At least one of these occasions was in Nov 2012, can't remember when the other one was.

He says he has been doing it this way for the past 3 years.

I have had another reply from a different caravan owner and they want to do a bank transfer or it will cost 4% in fees.

It seems to be pretty standard.

If you had found his details on an another website or in an ad in the paper how would you have paid him?
    Id take the risk tbh.

Yes, it was in March, so very recently. It's fairly easy to get around though I think ;)

    Morning all

He has sent me a message saying that someone else is interested in the caravan and I have to make a decision before 8pm. I don't know if I am just thinking about this too much.

Why don't you book a caravan through a caravan hire specialist rather than doing this on eBay. I can't help but think half of the problems here are because you're worried about getting scammed.
