But giving up some creative control comes with the film-making territority. And people are sceptical about celebrity Kickstarter campaigns, because wealthy, famous and well-connected people can easily use their status to get money for their projects rather than ask the general public for money.
Braff could easily have made "Wish I Was Here" within the Hollywood system, rather than exploit a system designed to help creators who would otherwise have no hope of getting money for their artistic projects.
I personally would not have done what Braff did. And there's certainly a valid argument to be made about wealthy people accessing this kind of resource (anyone who's ever applied for an ACE grant will know the debates there). But it's a slippery slope. There are tons of crowd-funded projects that are godawful, or being run by people who are totally incompetent, or crooks. I know a director who's dad is a billionaire hotel tycoon who crowd-funds her work. Is that okay because she's not famous? It's unlikely that the people who donated to Braff's kickstarter would have donated to some random starving artist instead had his not existed. He didn't take any opportunity away from anyone, and provided opportunities to all the unknowns who worked on the film.

And, I'm sorry, but what you say is simply not factually correct. I've been working in film for 15 years and currently have two (one short and one Brit indie feature) in financing. For starters, the level of creative control you are expected to give up is not minor, often it's literally total control. It is not remotely "easy" to find funding for films, unless you're an A++++ lister (like Will Smith or Tom Cruise at their height) whose name alone can greenlight films. And even the handful of celebs in that category, they wouldn't be able to greenlight anything. There are plenty of celebs more famous and successful than Braff who have struggled for years to get their films financed. It doesn't matter how connected you are, if people don't think your work will make money they won't fund it.

Only complete idiots self-fund movies out of their own pocket, though, and there are several legit reasons why it's a bad idea. It's like movie making 101. He probably (but not definitely) could have sold the screenplay but in doing so you often have to give up a lot of creative control. Actors with far higher profile and more connections than him struggle to find financing.

I wouldn't have done it in his position but I can understand why he chose to go down that route.

Shane Richie reportedly lost £500,000 of his own money after he helped finance the movie "Shoreditch", had to sell his house IIRC.

And judging by the film's Box Office performance they were right :) Reminds me of Paul McCartney who funded a lot of "Give My Regards to Broadway". He said that he'd struggled to find backers for the film and in retrospect they were right

Honourable mentions go to Todd Bridges and Dana Plato both formerly of Different Strokes Fame.

And Gary Coleman too. Although he had a successful childhood career he struggled later on, and ended up suing his parents for the misappropriation of his money.

    Only Todd Bridges still alive

Yeah, it was like there was a jinx on "Different Strokes". Many of the people involved with seemed to have a rotten time afterwards.

Have we mentioned actor Stephen Collins yet? Star of "Star Trek: TMP", "Seventh Heaven" and "Private Practice", he became a Hollywood pariah after admitting he had "inappropriate sexual conduct" with three minors:

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/people/2014/12/17/stephen-collins-admits-sexual-abuse-terribly-wrong-katie-couric/20524835/

He was fired from projects such as "Scandal" and "Ted 2" as a result, and re-runs of
"Seventh Heaven" were pulled from the airwaves.

Lisa Loring who played Wednesday Addams in the '60's TV show married a porn actor in the late '80's. She also had a huge drug problem around that time.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisa_Loring

This led to rumours that she was doing porn, she apparantly was not.
However there was indeed porn actress called Lisa K Loring, which was obviously not her real name, but some theories were that the "original" Lisa Loring may have known something about it

Yes, that was shame because I'd have quite liked to have inappropriate sexual conduct with him myself.

I feel sorry for the fellow cast members, many were getting a nice income from the residuals from various channels airing re-runs and now the shows are unlikely to be shown again

I would love to hear from Tom Oliver (Lou Carpenter in neighbours)
He played all the "other" parts in "Abba the movie" so must have been getting good royalties (if he had a decent agent at the time)
Now he gets nothing any more due to one other actor being a pedo

First name that popped into my head was Fatty Arbuckle. Lots of people have mentioned him already though!

Ingrid Bergman is another one, but, like Alan Partridge, she bounced back!

It seems the once-respected Clement Freud now has his reputation in ruins after
several woman claim they were sexually abused by him, and his widow confirmed
    the allegations:

Though as with Savile, the accusations only came out after he died.

Jared Fogle AKA "Jared from Subway", famous in the US for appearing in ads for the sandwich chain. Convicted last year on child p*rn charges and travelling to have sex with
a minor, and sentenced to 15 years in the slammer:

And apparently he's piled the weight back on since he was thrown in prison.

Like Savile though a lot of people had thought him unpleasant even before the allegations surfaced.

Have we mentioned poor Judy Garland? Sadly, the woman who sang "Get Happy" rarely did. After becoming a Hollywood icon in "The Wizard of Oz", Garland later suffered from finanicial problems, as well as drink and drunk problems. and ended up accidentally overdosing on barbiturates.

An actor or singer or performer denied repeat fees due to the work not being shown any more, due to another person in the programme being convicted of child abuse.

Bet there are some bands who only appeared on TOTP once or twice, and if they happened to be episodes hosted by Savile - then they don't get shown.
The songwriter would also not get a royalty as the song was not broadcast.

Some people will be losing out on money - which they may need in retirement - due to prgrammes or movies not being shown on TV for reasons of historical child abuse.

I believe he's referring to Robert Hughes who was convicted of child abuse offences in 2014. Sky Arts pulled their planned showing of the film last Christmas because someone complained. No idea if TV screenings in other countries have been effected but it's still widely available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Well, we've just got to mention one Boris Johnson, the least charismatic politician I can think of and a nine-bob note to boot. Shame Blankety Blank isn't being screened any more because he would be a natural. What's the betting we see him in the next instalmet of I'm A Celebrity... and/or Celebrity Big Brother?
