More expensive by the dozen?

I was in Poundstretcher yesterday, and spotted some cat food, at 39p a tin, or 3 tins for £1.

I asked at the counter, for a tray of 12 tins.

The till girl called another member of staff, who fetched a tray and one loose can.

The till girl scanned the single can, then entered x12.

The price came up as, you've guessed it, £4-68.

I pointed out that it was 3 tins for £1.

She then went through the business of adjusting the price on the till, and making a hand-written entry on a sheet, to show why she had "discounted" the price.

Surely it can't be that hard, to program the till, to recognise that 12 is 4 lots of 3

    Not shockingly terrible.

Just a bit ridiculous that, in this age, a till can't cope with a 39p a tin, or 3 tins for £1, deal.

You got the deal. I'm not sure what is ridiculous about it.

We can send men to the moon, probes to Pluto and beyond, fly people across the Atlantic at Mach 2, transplant hearts, yet an electronic till can't handle a simple "buy 3 - save 17p" deal.

Ah right. I see why you are so perturbed about it now that you have put it into the context of scientific / technical achievements. It really is about time this issue was addressed. There's clearly an opportunity here for an aspiring Nobel Prize winner.

Quit whining. There are people in this world who don't get given mozzarella sticks with their McDonalds order. Look one of them in the eye and tell them you've got a problem. They'll laugh in your face. IN. YOUR. FACE.

    You know what, FORGET IT.

I just thought it was worth commenting, on how ridiculous it is that, in this day and age, they can't get their tills to cope with something as simple as 3 cans for less than the price of 3x1 can.

I am the manager of a new shop and my tills can't cope with deals. Staff need to see the deal and enter it manually.

Why in this day and age can't my tills automatically process deals ?

Because I opted for the shop owner not to bankrupt himself with crazy expensive till systems and instead got some cheaper models that dont have all the bells and whistles on them. A pain in the arse ya because I know how good tills can be, but for various reasons we decided to use others.

So in this day and age tills can do these things, but not everybody has them.

You would think a major company, like Pounstretcher would have them.

    Poundland & Poundworld have them.

Very good reply i can understand it in your case small shop owner ect ect.

But poundstretcher are a national highly profitable chain whose tills should be more modern and up to date surely.

Why didn't they just scan an individual can 12 times?

I think Bob is a nice guy, but if he is over reacting this much, its probably best he spend a week or two away from the forum IMO. This forum is not real life and shouldn't ever get you upset/stressed out.

That would be a fair comparison if the people designing rockets, probes and performing heart surgery are also the same people programming and setting up tills but they're not.

I said that, but it got deleted

I bet the tills in the NASA gift shop can handle 3 for 2, 20% off for pensioners, reduced to clear and coupons all at the same time

and under different magnitudes of gravitational pull
