I would really recommend listening to the latter, because it is just brilliant to hear a metal version of I Want It That Way! It's just awesome, great cover.
Go here and here to listen to Alison Krauss and Union Station cover "Because You Asked Me To" from Waylon Jennings and "But You Know I Love You" from Dolly Parton.
Kelly Osborne - Papa Don't Preach (we're talking different, not better, remember ).
Mike Flowers Pop - Wonderwall.
Mad World is probably the best one I've heard and can recall OTTOMH, as it really showed how deep and poignant the lyrics are, which got lost in the TFF original.
I remember a one-hit wonder in the early 80's (or late 70s) where a band - I think they were called Telex - did an electronic version of Rock around The Clock.

Ellie Golding / Elton John - Your Song ---- I hate her for doing that, I can't hear it the same way without hearing Diana Vickers-alike singing it.
I didn't like the way she changed to lyric to 'a girl who makes potions in a travelling show'... because in the era being talked about, girls would not have been making potions, they'd have been looking after the children and baking... we're talking Victorian era here, not expressing approval but women just didn't become alchemists. So her version song sounded false to me, she should have just left it as it was... particularly as she also pronounces 'girl' as 'gull', so sounded like a posh school sixth former.
I'm also not keen on the Power of Love cover, but Holly Johnson has such a distinctive voice, it's really difficult to cover one of his songs and sound as good... don't know if anyone's ever tried any other Frankie songs.
Love that, completely new to me. Talking of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", I'm a big fan of Creedence Clearwater Revival's version too. Over 11 mins long!
I find it quite haunting.
The orchestral version of "The Last Time" by the Andrew Oldham Orchestra, which was heavily sampled for inclusion in the Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony" bears little melodic resemblance to the Rolling Stones' original.
"With A Little Help From My Friends" by Joe Cocker is significantly different from and significantly better than (imo) the original by the Beatles.

I think it just goes to shows what a great song Norman Whitfield wrote, that 3 totally different versions of this song all sound bloody marvelous.
Gary Jules' Mad World is the most pathetic cover of all time, turning a great dark-tinged electropop track into a whiney twee John Lewis-advert style tw*tfest.
I haven't heard it, but whatever Will Young did with Hey Ya is fine by me; the Outkast song is one of the most godawful pieces of crap of that decade.
Comments

Allison Williams - Tik Tok Disney style, oh yes!
Sam Tsui - Hold it Against Me Ballad
Turned a chauvinistic pop song into a haunting melancholic ballad!
I'm gonna go with:
Paul Gilbert (American guitarist) covering the Spice Girls' 2 Become 1 with guitar
And Steel Panther covering the Backstreet Boys' I Want It That Way
I would really recommend listening to the latter, because it is just brilliant to hear a metal version of I Want It That Way! It's just awesome, great cover.
