Talk about appealing to the lowest common denominator! :D

Must just watch it a few more times to confirm that I'm disgusted by its objectification of women :o:o:o

(Notes the name "Emily Ratajkowski" for future Googling)

I get the impression that Pharrell is only on the track because of his recent career-reviving hit with Daft Punk and that's also largely why this one's a success.

I'm not saying it's a bad song though!

Except this song came out before Daft Punk's...

I had only seen the censored version of the video so I couldn't understand what all of the "sexist" comments were about...I've just seen the uncensored version on Vevo. I get it now, though I still quite like the song.

I only became aware of it the other day in the car. Before then I was completely oblivious. I don't know how long it has been out for.

The leering at younger women when you realise they are all much older actually is definitely creepy.

Just when you think there definitely wouldnt be a video this way with blokes. Whole load of naked fellas walkin about, dicks swingin all over to a classy beat, with guys/women in suits ogling them. People would be calling that out as disgusting....

It reminds me of Robert Palmer in terms of the overall image thing. Especially from Palmers album covers from the 70s and 80s like 'Sneakin Sally Through the Alley, Pressure Drop, Riptide etc. Palmer wanted to put a playboy type image across. Palmer's music was a little heavier I guess but there are clear similarities in approach!

But the girls arent showing their genitals- they have knickers on! So your comparsion if flawed.

Why do people think willies are the equivalent of boobs?

    Coz men dont have boobs?
    Women don't have willies?
So the men in the hypothetical video need to waggle something around as they do their gobshitey dance while being leered at. Something you wouldnt normally see...

It is a bit creepy but it's not unusual. Women parading for men. It's in the lyrics which clearly express a male viewpoint and are somewhat suggestive. It would have been interesting to have an older set of girls parading on the video.

there are plenty of videos with buff topless men - how do you think thay makes men feel?

this is just the same but in reverse.

Its not the same, ok how about this, the guys wear the same tiny g strings so their member is covered but a ball or two flops out ?

It's certainly a catchy tune, you can't fault it there. The lyrics are creepy and quite sexist but I've just come to expect that kind of thing these days. However, the video really it just awful. At first I thought 'This has to be meant ironically, making a point about sexism in music videos' but in any interviews defending the video, Robin Thicke doesn't mention that at all. It just shows these young women as toys who are there to dance around for the entertainment of the much older men.
Nudity is not the problem here, there's nothing wrong with nudity if it's there for a reason. The point is that the video is so demeaning to women, portraying them as having no purpose other than to look sexy for men.
I'm getting too annoyed now, that's enough internet for today I think.

Heard this for the first time the other day and thought it was a track from the 90s that I'd missed.

I love it though - very catchy, especially that simple bassline.

Its a bit creepy when you listen to the lyrics and see the video....like. I can see how it could turn people on, but, the guys are basically just telling the women what they like, for them. And like, how hot they are themselves. And, the fact the men are clearly rich and have money and are wearing clothes...and the women are next to naked and... I don't know. It makes me a bit uncomfortable. I'd like to like it but it weirds me, a bit.

Creepy, tacky and degrading, much like that sort of music in general.....and they'll carry on whilst the little girls follow them around like sheep.

Alot of music videos are like that now and apparently alot of women like it

Anybody who is beyond offended by the video has clearly never seen this http://www.myvideo.de/watch/839263/Nelly_Tip_Drill

(I suggest watching the entire thing as it gets worse as it goes along)

To be fair though, most women wouldn't feel the same about seeing men with the balls hanging out as most men do about seeing topless women. We'd probably find it either funny or want to vomit

There have been a few studies on the link between rap and porn including hard core porn. It doesn't reflect the best parts of African American culture considering the radicalism of rap in terms of its style and content in its early days.

To say porn is sexist wouldn't actually be news. I suppose it only reflects the broader issue of sexism in society and the music biz is just a part of this. It is astonishing how blatant it is at times though.

It is good when this sexism is challenged.

And although there are a few videos where there are shirtless muscle bound guys dancing for female stars (and not that many come to mind) the female is often underdressed too - thinking the likes of Pink, Gaga, Mariah or J Lo. There isn't this power imbalance.

Although I like the song I have to agree. Just watch a Pitball video for example, loads of naked or nearly naked girls, whilst a fairly unattractive guy is there fully clothed.

It's mostly on rap videos, it does get to the point where it is almost amusing though. Especially when the rapper is on the 'big' or not good looking side but of course all the women have to be both attractive and wearing no clothes.

Oh and of course most of them seem to be rampant bisexuals as well. All for the pleasure of the guys though it seems.
