Radio 2 studio kit

I heard the Chris Evans Breakfast show for the first time since his days on Virgin Radio today, and I was surprised that when he was talking over beds, the level of the bed was up and down quite significantly between sentences.

I don't remember Evans being one to indulge in such blatant "fader w*nking" when I used to listen, so has he got into bad habits, or is it an artefact of compression or some kind of auto ducking system?

If he's got the bed very low it maybe the AGC or compression ramping it up in the silances, I doubt it however as Radio 2 isn't heavily processed would be more likely to happen on something like Capital.
