If Capaldi's going to play a "snarly" Doctor then he could handle a tougher kind of companion. Perhaps someone who needs saving from a life of crime and the Doctor gives him a kick up the backside by showing him the real evils of the universe. I say "him" but of course it could be a female. I don't really mind, a great companion is a great companion regardless of gender.
I hope there's no change during series 8 though. Having been so immersed in the Doctor's whole timeline, Clara can bring a very unique perspective to the role of cross-regeneration companion. She'll think she's prepared for it but the change in the Doctor's character sounds like it could be one of the most extreme ever.

I quite like your idea of a companion there. It's an interesting one alright.

like it. You could do this, but where he take's the male companion as a favour to clara at first (like it's a childhood friend who's gone off the rail's or something) and have a really intense first few episodes of this dynamic where he and the doctor are practically coming to blows over anything and everything and clara has to keep breaking them up, until it comes to a point where the doctor finally find's a way to get through to/relate to him

A yoof, hey? Or are we talking a properly dark criminal here.
It has been done before- sort of- in the TV movie, as Chang Lee is involved with gangs.
And with the popularity of Sherlock, it's clear that the public have an appetite for bromances.
It needn't even be a bromance- of course they're going to scrap it out for alpha male.
A new Ian, an unbeleiver, someone who can keep the doctor in check and fight the baddies - oh my - i think I've almost described a male version of Amy Pond!

They can call him Andy Lake.
Actually a WW1 Soldier who is also a grandson of Jackson Lake would be a pretty good companion
