So 25 years down the line, has it made a difference? Have you come across any of it's projects? Is it money down the drain as far as Africa is concerned? Just wondered what people thought.

Imho It has helped some of the population, but the majority of money as no doubt gone to their corrupt governments who are living it up, whilst a high end of their population are in poverty. I won't be donating until they learn how to use contraception, as without it, they will be stuck in a over populated viscous circle, where death is unavoidable as there isn't enough money to treat them all.

Until this happens, they will keep on breeding & expect the money to keep rolling in.

I can recall watching the first CR, in early '88. I recall it kicked off with Lenny Henry and someone else co-presenting, with the first link concluding with Lenny giving the other guy a custard pie in the face!

What was Living Doll by Cliff Richard and The Young Ones in aid of when it was released in 1986? Was that Comic Relief as well?

I've still got some of the 1988 Comic Relief on video tape somewhere. I watched it a few years ago. I remember Philip Schofield being in it with his dark hair, and there was the gunge tank. Plus they had a thing where if they raised a certain amount of money, they would show a clip from Fawlty Towers (Basil hitting his car).

A friend has been funded, through an English charity, by a Comic Relief grant to train and work as a specialist interpreter.

She assists a team in obtaining information from young children (usually aged between 5 and 14), who were rescued from various British locations of child trafficking and/or exploitation.

These children couldn't speak English and usually are too traumatised for an ordinary interpreter to deal with. This is where my friend steps in as she's a qualified clinical psychologist as well as being a qualified specialist interpreter.

You obviously missed tonight's "One Show" (BBC1) where it was dedicated to the achievements of Comic Relief. It is never money down the drain if you are talking about saving lives.

Your post shows a high degree of ignorance. You are confusing Comic Relief with what may happen to money donated to charities (where it doesn't always get to where it is needed).

The contraception issue is intrinsically linked to poverty. The reason why they have so many children is for the workload/labour issue plus to be taken care of in old age.

Comic Relief stands as one of the few saving graces of what humanity can do....the face of compassion is a redeeming factor in our otherwise corrupt society.

I've never watched the show or donated. The governments of the UK give billions in aid and it's wasted.

I have no idea what projects are supported as they give so little info after the millions are donated.

I have just checked and no surprise London has the majority of the UK projects.

I have just looked at the 2012 accounts and they pay in total £13.5m in wages, 286 staff, of that 15 earn more than £60k.

If the only way you're going to get looked after in old age is by your children, and you don't know how many of your children are going to survive to adulthood (and be able to care for you) due to a combination of disease and lack of medical facilities resulting in a high child death rate, I'd like to know after how many children darkjedimaster would start to use contraception and stop having children in the expectation that at least one them will survive long enough to look after him?

If you had actually clicked on London insrtead of the total you might find that the HQ's of many projects / grants may be there but they are not exclusive to London many are National such as MIND , Alcohol Concern, Save the Children, Barnardos, Alzhemiers Society, The Boxing Academy, Cricket for Chnage and so on. There are London based projetcs but the majority do work around the UK and overseas.

Maybe they could replace them all with traceystape when she gets sent on an unpaid work placement on the Work Programme.

And in those 2011/2012 accounts they raised £89 million and they gave away £86 million, not bad to my mind .

It was the first ever official Comic Relief charity single in 1986, as I recall.

Add up the non London ones and the total is far higher so it hasn't the majority.
