Sorry if this has been posted before, I did check but not all the way down to the really old threads.
My dad made a comment about a couple of adverts on tv tonight, the first for a lash extending mascara the second for formula milk and he made this snide comment about the purpose of the beauty products is to attract a man.
so, here's my question. why do you wear makeup? is it to attract a guy or is it for yourself? I like to think I do it for myself, for example I put a full face of makeup every day for work and it has nothing to do with attracting anyone. I do it for boosting my own self esteem.
Am I kidding myself and am I subconciously trying to attract someone or is it a load of rubbish?

I see my face as a canvas. One day I might feel like looking like a bronzed goddess, the next day a 1940s film star.
Your dad, like many men, is labouring under the illusion that anything a woman does beauty-wise is to attract a man. Poor man.
I only wear additional make up on special occasions or meeting with friends. When im home i never wear make up if its just me and bf. So i guess im one who uses it for self confidence.
My fiancé is blind- so, no I'm not doing it for men.
If I'm going out, I use makeup to add to whatever look I'm going for.
No that's what they use the internet for
I always notice a woman's makeup and if it's someone I know and they're looking good I'll tell them. I must admit that the first thing I notice is nail varnish rather than facial makeup.
I know this is off topic as I'm not really answering the OP as to why I wear makeup...
I have always worn makeup, even whilst at school and my face doesn't look like mine without it. If I don't wear makeup I think i look pale and pasty. My main thing is mascara, and i don't even leave the house without a little on.
I have been married for 20yrs, so i dont think its to do with trying to attract anyone. I just prefer the way my face looks with it on, and the fact its a habit. I can now make up my face in about 5 mins after applying it for about 25yrs.
Other times I put it on just beside I like it, because it is pretty or because I like the colours, or to make myself look less ill/tired/pale/etc, or because it's summer and I want to wear summery colours, or because I like glittery eyeliner, or because I just want to prettify myself. Some of the best parts of nights out are getting ready and putting make-up on etc.
I do always wear it when I go out though to help complete my outfit. If I'm going to rock night I plaster the dark eye shadow on, if I'm going on a work's party I make it look pretty.
I don't do it to please guys or attract them, well very rarely. I did notice this one guy at work I liked, so next day I put on some make up, but I didn't see him that day
So make up has a variety of reasons, as long as you don't look like you should be on Snog Married Avoid, make up is good.
In years gone by, unless it was a special occasion it only mattered how you looked at the time, and if you felt uncomfortable about it you could just forget it after the event and move on. Nowadays you can be doing something as ordinary as sitting in a beer garden with a mate and someone will see fit to preserve the event for posterity and upload it before you've even finished your pint.
I don't wear make-up for men, I wear it for me - and for the sake of all those PC screens that are no longer under the protection of a guarantee
The rest to enhance my face with shading
Mascara to give me eyelashes
Lipstick to give me colour
I feel so washed out without make up and felt it attracted the bullies to pick on me. I feel like the vulnerable schoolgirl I was if I go out without it. Although, I have more shadows and veins now.
I wasn't allowed to wear it at school so wore as much I could get away with there but wore loads when I went out and it made me feel better and less ill (and less vulnerable)
I got male attention but it was the girls who looked good at school without wearing any I envied - dark haired ones who had slightly darker skin (not black skin).
When I came back from my Christmas Caribbean holiday, my skin was tanned and I was accused of wearing make up one the first day of term in January. This was where I got my desire to use sunbeds and lie in the sun when I could - this was the 1970s! I felt so much better being tanned!
