The OP acts as a great 'inverse' barometer whether it be sport or comedy of what's good and what's bad.

It would be remiss of me not to point out that I am actually a man of considerable taste and discernment.

Just like you've never heard of Stephen Jones and Paul Rees.

You'll be telling me you've never heard of Oliver Holt next. Oliver's won awards too.

Oliver Holt is excellent. Easily my favourite football journalist.

Are you a character from a Charles Dickens' novel?

I would agree with the Mail being good for sport. Sunday.

    Or a Rolling Stones record?

Actually he's an excellent cricket writer, it just happens the DM naturally covers football to a greater degree so we see a lot more of his articles on football.

Also, he has a great weekly section where he tears apart ridiculous things that are happening in a number of sports. And his constant attacks on Michel Platini are nearly always hilarious.

I occasionally disagree with him on some things, but it would be very dull to agree with a writer all the time. One thing I always observe is how well he justifies his opinions, compared to many other sports writers. Something which I feel goes towards all his awards.

A very good post, Roger. Martin does indeed dig deep for the facts.

I suspect many people don't realise that Britain's most influential newspaper is also very good for sport. Martin Samuel (The Mail's Voice of Sport) has predictably been awarded Sports Writer of the Year for the fifth time.

For more details of the Mail's success:

    Oh look, you're 'Inactive'.

I wonder who you'll come back as.

Are you on The Mail payroll ? or are you Martin Samuel ? I get the impression he could drown kittens and you would defend him.

Martin's too nice to drown kittens - even if he's more of a dog man.

Interestingly, Martin has won yet another award:

Granted to him by those fine people at Editorial Intelligence.

Now has anyone got a clue who they are?

Oliver Holt is excellent. Easily my favourite football journalist.

I've heard others sing his praises.

Congratulations are in order for Oliver: he's now hit the big time, being signed up by The Mail on Sunday.

He makes his debut this week-end.
