devastating for Anderson to get out to the second last ball

think sri lanka deserved their win but great effort from ali especially to even get us that close

a match we were in complete control of at tea on day 2 and let go

    expect cook to be using a lot of phrases like ;

    great team spirit
take the positives out of the game
learn from our mistakes and look forward to the next series

Swanny/Aggers seemed to think he would have got it in the face?

Perhaps easier said than done but if the ball is much too high to hit the stumps, keep gloves and bat away from the ball, and take a jam in the ribs or on the helmet for the team!!

Shame ..... England just have no luck, only bad luck!!

What an agonising way to lose after coming so close.

Not with an helmet and face guard.

Brian Close would have headed it away.

I did not expect it to get down to the penultimate ball

Credit to England for showing some bottle but they should never have been in that situation in the first place

Try telling the media/pundits that the players don't care after seeing Jimmy 'emotional' on receiving his man of the series award

I guess they just meant it was too hard for him to do that.

I recall it was claimed he was knocked unconscious at short leg managing to utter the words "catch it".

I know it's easier said than done, but why didn't Moeen try and get down the other end in the penultimate over so that he could have faced the final over

fairly sure he would have done that if he could , the sri lankans were making it difficult to get the single tho

Just the start to the summer that England didn't need after the Ashes and T20 failures.

Moeen looking goodMakes the selection for the next Test a tad harder though as I thought he may be the one to make way for Stokes
Jordan looks like he may be the one

Anderson or Broad needs to be dropped. They are becoming too medium pace.
Broad has not got speed back, even with a long rest.

Well, according to Steveaustin316 Anderson should be hung at dawn, straight after Plunkett,

I made a comment this morning in reaction to something Michael Vaughan wrote where he said broad needed a rest

hes only bowled 140 overs in FC cricket this year so he hardly needs a rest , lack of match fitness from not bowling enough is more likely to be the issue than fatigue

Nope, the problem also is that with no Swann, only 4 pace bowlers get too overworked,

but we had ali in the team to bowl , cook just under-used him

when swann was playing it was usually just him and 3 seamers , so hardly an excuse tbh

    just reading the reports about the after-match interviews , if I was jimmy Anderson I would be seriously p!ssed off at cook's comments , he supposedly said ;

"we needed to be brave for 6 and 1/2 hours today but could only manage it for 6 hours and 29 minutes"

Well, it shows that test cricket is the best form of the game, and even draws can be riveting (remembering Sri Lanka at lords a few years ago on the final day).

Maybe England shouldn't have got rid of their best batsman and should have played a specialist spinner like Panessar.

Didn't England drop a ridiculous amount of catches during that game?

Indeed. Not a great result in the series but remember both games did go right down to the final two balls.

I feel for him. I think that he felt guilty about not letting the ball hit him.

    However, sometimes reactions are instinctive.

England had a few wickets to knock over for an innings victory and Lords had seats for a fiver. I took an last minute holiday and went, expecting to be out by lunch. Flintoff just wouldn't bowl Pannesar until far too late, so Sri Lanka kept plugging away and got a decent lead. Even Murali got in on the act (with a six?) and by the time they were all out it was stretch target for England, but they didn't even bother going for it. It was one of the best days' cricket I've ever watched. Today might have been even better but I had to follow on line via Cricinfo.
