Since Mountain Lion is coming out in July sometime, I thought it'd be a good idea to have a thread about it and for anyone upgrading to it or to post information about it. Who's going to be upgrading when it comes out? I probably won't be, not straight away anyway.

When it comes out it will be released via the App Store and it will upgrade and your programs and data will remain in tact. But always good to have a backup.
That reminds me, I need to do a backup soon. Haven't done one for a while
Most programs shouldn't be affected with the upgrade. At worst, some will maybe need an update to fix any odd glitches.
From what I've read ML mostly involves adding some iOS apps, rather than any major overhaul.
I just long for the day reviewers can review these sorts of things without using the phrase "evolution, not revolution"!
So that means ML is just a revamp of Lion like the way Snow Leopard was a revamp of Leopard?
I am running Snow Leopard on a 2010 Mini. I would hate to pay for the download then find my hardware is too old for the OS to be upgraded.
Looks like a good price for an OS upgrade though.
I think it's down to you to check compatibility before purchasing. Anyway it should work on 2009 Mac Minis onwards. http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
Just had a look at the tech specs link that psionic posted. Your 2010 Mini would be fine. My 2010 Macbook Pro would be ok too. I'm still running Snow Leopard on it which is fine right now. If I upgraded I'd have to find a Mountain Lion toy as well to go with it
And Leopard was just a revamp of Tiger...
I think the main features are the iOS apps, tighter integration with iCloud, and some new security stuff.
There's a preview on the Apple site:
Mountain Lion.
At £14 its probably a no brainer.
I'll probably hold off on installing it until the end of the year and do it at the same time as i upgrade my motherboard to one that does (Intel) native USB 3.0 and SATA 3. I think OS X peaked with Snow Leopard so i'm in no hurry, but i'll need to upgrade to get SATA 3.
Pssst, keep that quiet!
The reason the newer updates are so cheap is they are only applicable to a handful of systems and the changes are more subtle. More importantly it is in Apples interest to subsidise it so as to encourage takeup in their cloud based services. Keep everyone within the bubble and anyone who doesnt meet the criteria buys new hardware (in theory).
What's not to love about Mountain Lion.

Upgrade or else.

It maybe had more headline features, but to a greater or lesser degree each release is a progression from the previous one.
I didn't realise Mountain Lion was only applicable to a handful of systems though, I thought Macs going back as far as 2007 are supported.
The first one is so cute! If I saw the second one I would run a mile.:p
* When is Mountain Lion actually coming out? I'm gonna buy an 11" Macbook Air either at the end of July or sometime in August and I'm hoping to get Lion rather than ML (as finding a Mountain Lion toy will be harder ). Or will I be offered a free upgrade if I buy my MBA then?
* How do you copy purchased App Store apps onto another Mac? I have some installed on my Pro that I'll want on my Air. The Air won't be a replacement for my lovely Pro but it'll be a second computer should something go wrong with this and it'll also be a handy machine for using out and about. I much prefer it to the iPad.
Copying your apps to your second machine is easy.
Just look here.
Thanks. I'll bookmark that so I have it handy when I'm setting up my new Mac. I'll still be using my Pro though, the Air isn't a replacement. It's a backup machine and it'll be used a lot in the house (eg surfing while watching TV).
