Surely the first day of the week is sunday.

The weekend is saturday, end of one week , sunday the beginning of the next.

    Monday.

Why is there any debate about it?

I've never considered anything but Monday as the start of the week.

Not even now, and I work Sundays.

    Monday.

Our culturally Christian heritage is based around God resting on the seventh day - which is Sunday.

Saturday and Sunday are collectively known as the weekend which in my book means the end of the week.

Monday is therefore the first day of the week.

I can understand how there is some confusion though. When I was a kid (late '60's/early '70's), some calendars had the week running Sunday to Saturday with Sunday as the first day of the week. I seem to remember this being explained to me that Sunday was the lords day so it was the first day of the week. Didn't make much sense then and still doesn't now.

    Pedantically Sunday, but informally Monday.

Monday is the start of the week. Those Sunday to Saturday calendars annoy me. Just an added bit of information for you all there.

Monday. Sunday just makes no sense as the beginning. For one, it is part of the weekEND. Two, most people's working week begins with Monday. What possible reason could there be for Sunday being day 1? Even the OP's reason doesn't make sense.

It's just one of those things which are a matter of convention or agreement, like whether a day begins or ends at 12pm.

Nobody would ever say "I'll meet you at 1pm on the first day of next week", or "the contract ends at 12pm on the 4th". They'd say exactly what they mean.

A piece of string has two ends,
A week has two ends Sunday (the start) and saturday (the finish)
they are the ends of the week, like a piece of string.

Only lazy buggers and shift workers think the day begins 12pm.

Well, the first column in Google Calendar, Lightining and Outlook Calendar in all cases is a Monday. So I guess there's your definitive answer!

Say what? A day begins at midnight! I've never heard anyone debate the starting point of a day, least not to say it started at midday!
