123 could amend/delete the DNS but there's not much else they can do as it's all up to Nominet. The existing registrant has about 90 days to renew it, otherwise it gets deleted. Some registrars (e.g. 123) let you "back order" such domains so that you can get them once they become available (or at least join the race). The one I use doesn't offer this facility so I'm not going to try it.

I was under the (perhaps mistaken) impression that the web hosting was also with 123 for that domain, in which case 123 could quite easily redirect it to a holding page.

It doesn't matter where the web hosting is, the DNS is with 123 so they can redirect it anywhere they like.

Continuing the detective work, I note that trovetv.co.uk was updated yesterday and the name servers changed to:

ns1.domainhasexpired.com
ns2.domainhasexpired.com

As yet, this still hasn't stopped it working.

domainhasexpired.com was itself created in March 2012 and is registered to:

Matt Mansell
Mesh Digital Ltd
The Old Forge
Shackstead Lane
Godalming
Surrey
GU7 1RJ

Both 123 and Mesh Digital appear to be part of Webfusion, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Webfusion.
