SOAP....still brilliant after all these years, bought the whole lot .
ALAN PARTRIDGE....any Partridge is top class.
    RISING DAMP....what can I say?
REGGIE PERRIN.....totally different from Rigsby, some truly wonderful characters.
BOTTOM.......Love it, love it, love it!!!
SORRY! Ronnie Corbett`s best ever show.
CITIZEN SMITH....better than the over rated Only Fools And Horses, in my opinion.
    DEAR JOHN...under rated little gem.
YOU RANG M`LORD? Wonderful cast with amazing period detail.
ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE....Patrick, Pippa, Mister Sweeney all add to the mix.

I'm Alan Partridge - Nothing else to say
One Foot In The Grave - Usually excellent with a good supporting cast but ended at the right time
You Rang M'Lord - Overlooked but cleverly written and well acted
The Golden Girls - Loved this series
The Office - Still the best thing Gervais has done in my opinion
Porridge - Well acted, great scripts
Steptoe and Son - As above
Rising Damp - One of ITV's few funny comedy series
Home to Roost - Often forgotten but I thought John Thaw was excellent in this
Hi-De-Hi - Tacky, but a good cast and some good episodes, it should have ended 2 series before it did though

Love Hi-De-Hi but do agree it should have ended earlier, probably when Simon Cadell (Fairbrother) left for me.

Other sitcoms I love include (in no particular order):
Only Fools and Horses (I know it's obvious but I can watch it again and again and it will always laugh - although I tend to ignore the last 3 specials they did in the early 00's, really should have left it alone)
    Porridge
    Open All Hours
    Steptoe and Son
    Hancock's Half Hour/Hancock
    Blackadder (particularly Blackadder Goes Fourth)
The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin (Stunning performance from Leonard Rossiter)
    Faulty Towers
    Dad's Army
Are You Being Served? (Another one that should have ended much earlier than it did though)
    Allo Allo
    I'm Alan Partridge
    Mr Bean
    Father Ted
    Barbara
    The Inbetweeners

I used to like watching repeats of On The Buses when i was younger but now I just find it really annoying.

I'm not a massive fan of American sitcoms but I do love Friends, Frasier and The Big Bang Theory. And also a few of How I Met Your Your Mother episodes I've seen have made me laugh but I haven't committed to watching it regularly.

I'm quite surprised by the lack of love for The Good Life.

I'd have to include Yes Minister/Yes Prime Minister - can't believe nobody has mentioned it.

Another vote for Coupling - much overlooked IMO

In my very long list I'd forgotten Yes, Minister and YPM! They were both very funny, great cast too.

I didn't get where I am watching that sort of sitcom.

    Don't use cliches, SULLA.

Mrs trevgo and I have always avoided cliches like the plague.

A cliche to us is like a red rag to a bull.

You haven't see Early Doors either according to your list.

I know my list was long, I love all of them so I couldn't narrow it down! No I haven't seen Early Doors, that's another for my 'to watch' list.

I agree with you about You Rang M'Lord. I think it could do with being repeated for a change as we seem to get Allo Allo and Dad's Army quite often.

Reading through the thread I can see a few others I loved :D League of Gentlemen, Just Good Friends...I think I'd better stop!

    Some Mothers do ave em'
    The Goode Life
    Still Game
    One Foot in the Grave
    Cheers
    Frasier
The High Life (Alan Cummings & Forbes Masson, I think)

Such a shame we only got one series of this - in fact, you might say "oh dearie me!"

    One Foot In The Grave
    Are You Being Served?
    The Golden Girls
    Birds Of A Feather
    Gavin & Stacey
    The Vicar Of Dibley
    Mrs Browns Boys
    Fresh Fields (yes really!!!)
    That's My Boy
    Miranda

I guess my list just shows how subjective comedy is! So many shows that are loved I cannot bear and I cannot understand how people find them funny especially-
The Big Bang Theory (just irritating)
Only Fools (some funny moments but never got the love for it)
    Seinfeld
    Fawlty Towers (just annoying)
    Rising Damp (just no)

Too bloody nice as The Young Ones said; other sitcoms by the same writers; EDC and Mulberry for instance; were far more subversive. My fav sitcoms are prettymuch everything else the cast of The Good Life did (EDC, Yes Minister, TTMB, even Solo)

One that deserves a first mention is Til Death do us Part, really well played by Warren Mitchell and the fact he hated the guts of Tony Booth in real life as well as on screen makes it all the more funny.

agree, your list is horrible imo. but a fair few must enjoy them shows as they are very popular. for me, mrs brown boys and birds of a feather are terrible.

not seen many people slag fawlty tower off on here before, but i would say it's definitely overrated.

Some episodes are forgettable and dated but The Germans with the triple whammy of the talking moose's head, the fire drill and his goose stepping is unequalled. How OFAH always gets the vote for the Chandelier scene when the rest of the episode is dull as anything beats me.

You can't seriously include Mrs Brown's Boys in a list of the best sitcoms of all time. Come on. Stop and think about it.

My favourite comedy series hasn't been shown in the UK. A mate in New Zealand put me onto it - and now both series are on Youtube.

    Seven Periods with Mr Gormsby.

    enjoy!

The four sitcoms which I have seen which stand head and shoulders above the rest are in alphabetical order: Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Extras and The Office.

There are 20-30 other very good ones I have seen and perhaps even better ones which I haven't yet seen. I'm a massive comedy fan and trying to work my way through as many as possible.

One Foot in the Grave without a doubt I would say.

The Big Bang Theory for its first 4 seasons was pretty great, I didn't agree with most saying it had gone in a bad direction but recently it's definitely feeling more and more like Friends 2.0.

This was mentioned on another thread a year or two back, probably by you :D At the time I looked it up on YouTube, saw series 1 and loved it! Was trying to get the DVDs but they were always too expensive. You've just reminded me, so I'm going to check prices again. Thanks for the reminder :)
