Self harm scar

Hello Everybody.

Before I start, i would prefer all judgmental comments to be kept out! I self harmed very bad back in June. I regret it very much to this day. Although it has been a short while I just wondered if there was any creams or remedies that could help me to repair the wound?

I've been using bio oil, coco butter, olive oil and aloe vera. Mostly creams that have vitamin E in.

I've posted a picture to so people know what the current state is.

I have used dermatix for a similar looking scar but I'm not sure that it helped. Moisturizing twice a day is said to help but I think you will have to give it time and either wear long sleeves or offer an explanation to interested parties. Perhaps in a year or two you could have your tattoo altered in some way to cover it?

I've got into the habit of mixing bio oil and coco butter. I did have laser booked for that tattoo to rework some bits of it but it all depends on how the scar turns out. My mother believes a bit of natural sun will help a lot. I'm not bothered about people seeing it i just want the wound to heal quicker.

I think the current medical advice is to use sunblock on scars as the sun is very damaging on the delicate new skin. Your scar seems to be healing fine given its quite new. Silicone gel would be more beneficial than cocoa butter and bio oil for healing I think. It did soothe itchyness and left my scar soft and flat. It just didn't help much with the discoloration.

Thank you for the advice. Have you used the sheets before?

No specific advice to give you but it has only been a couple of months and I would have thought that it may start to heal up over a longer period of time.

No, I've read good things about them online though. If you use them let me know how they work :)

I broke my nose 3 years ago. Not badly.

I was referred for an NHS ENT checkup and the consultant wasn't too worried.
But it was cut in several places as well, with big scabs and difficult to see what the long term damage was.

My consultant said that if it was too much out of shape or the scars were awful, then to get back in touch in a few weeks and they could tidy it up with minor plastic surgery.

In the end, my nose is not disjointed and the scars are hardly noticeable so I didn't bother.

But maybe you could get your scar seen to?

    Ask your GP.

    All the Best

    Hi Joshyx,

I still have a few scars on my arm also from self-harming in 2010 and to be honest I LOVE them, that may sound mad or weird mate but whenever I'm feeling low or like I want to do it again I look at them and think "Do I really want to do this again" and "How far I've come to NOT have done it again in 4+ years".

My ex-counsellor comended my attitude and way of thinking about he scars and said how far better my depression had got.

If you're desperate to get rid though best bet is seeing your GP who may refer you to someone at a hospital that can sort it out for you.

    All the best anyway mate,

    James

IS Clinical Sheald Recovery Balm has had good reviews for scars. Stupidly expensive though. £40+. I have not used it but I have seen loads of positive reviews about it. There is also something called Heal Gel. A little less expensive. I think both products emerged out of plastic surgeons who developed them to reduce the scarring on their plastic surgery patients.

Looking at your scar, not that I am an expert, it looks like it is healing but it will take time. You mention using creams with vit e. You could buy some vit e capsules, stick a needle in, and rub the oil directly on the scar. I am not sure whether sun will help or hinder.

My thoughts entirely. The scar looks like an accidental oven burn, but that tattoo is really disfiguring.

Thanks a lot guys. When i started the thread i didn't ask for comments about my tattoo? I'm going to try the dermatix to bring the redness down.

I don't know where you live but I had quite bad scars on the back of my hands and being mixed race they were pretty noticeable but I got this healing cream from this homoeopathic shop called Helios in Covent Garden last time I was in London and they've completely vanished.

I hope that the dermatix gel and/or sheets work for you over time but if not then a trip to the GP with a request for a referral to specialist consultant might be in order. Good luck!

If you want a cheap, natural rememdy, try manuka honey and baking soda. Mix equal quantities together and spread over the scar after your shower or bath, massage it in for a few minutes, then wring out a flannel in very hot water and apply it. Once it has cooled, use the flannel to clean the area. You can also dab the scar with lemon juice, leaving it on for a few minutes and then washing off as this also can fade scar tissue. Good luck!
