A 10% salary increase for MPs?
We must be a load of mugs.
Has anyone told them that this is a time of austerity?
Most of them work only part time as MPs and are moonlighting elsewhere.
Will anyone consider paying me £70k + expenses + a pension + a subsidised bar and restaurant for doing a part time job? I don't think so.
    Ooooooh, I'm angry. >:(. >:(. >:(

Don't get me wrong - I'm not in favour of the raise either - but in a sense they can't win. They gave the decision about their salary to an independent body, and now it's recommended the increase... what do they do?

EDIT - oops - seem to have cross posted with Martin's answer. Perhaps not quite as independent as I had thought,

Precisely. They gave the impression the deecision was down to an independant body but of course it's all smoke and mirrors. They are politicians after all.

They may well deserve it but personally I think it looks so bad in the public eye that it should not have even been suggested let alone recommended. They should be refusing to take it. My local MP is up in arms about it says he will be.

We're all in it together, we represent your interests. Now you're all having to put up with frozen salaries, or raises less than inflation, and zero work contracts and the whole of our society must do this because reasons.

Will we have a 10% pay rise ourselves? Hmm, such a difficult decision.

Honestly. Of course not! What a preposterous idea. Either we need austerity or we don't. "Oh but an independent body said blah blah..." Sure thing. There is no need even to ask any "independent" body. The answer is to stand with the people! Or at the very least to give the impression they are. They're already on a high salary so it's not as if it's the difference between eating or going wanting.

But maybe this is a good thing. The lynching will come all the sooner. Things can't go on as they are, there is no such thing as infinite growth.

If you are in any doubt about the evil intent of the Tory supporting Fib Dems look no further than their proposal (announced on the Tory propaganda channel LBC this morning) that the Fib Dems are now saying they will scrap the pensioners winter fuel allowance to pay for free bus passes for 16-21 year olds.

    I'd give them a 100% salary increase.

Then I'd take away the subsidies and the expenses claims for second housing; they'd be housed in a Travelodge style unit somewhere in London, with shuttle buses to take them to and from Parliament.

If you a re. 16-21 you would think it is a good idea.

Not all pensioners are poor. I think Richard Branson, Rupert Murdoch are pensioners.

So penalise the 99% because of the uber wealthy 1%? Old lady down the road dies because of cold and 20 year old Polish builder gets free bus pass? I thought you had more intelligence than that Martin.

But then, only just over half of the sitting Members of Parliament have supported the austerity measures imposed upon the public sector workers. Should the others be punished for the sins of just some?

I'd include a canteen in the basement, where they would have to eat the same food as hospital patients and school children. That might help to focus the minds a little. :D

That was the result of some sort of think tank or other. That is totally separate from the Fib Dems proposals.

Peter Stringfellow should have his taken away. He's been asking them to stop paying it for years. While we're at it why does John '2 Jags' Prescott still get that free bus pass since turning 65? Champagne socialism again?

I never said take it away from all pensioners. Maybe, as Jamie referred to the Higher Rate Pensioners.

Anyway, why does it have to be either cheap bus passes for young people or Winter Fuel Allowance? The government receive income from many sources that they could find the money from something else.

EU membership costs us £24 million a day . Stopping that would be a very useful contribution.

At least that is better than the usual lies spouted by Farage. :D

    An example only.

I'm sick of all the politics on LBC. Whatever happened to the wonderful 'news and information' station with correspondents from around the world. Now all we get are lies spouted by Tory/UKIP politicians. >:(>:(

Now LBC are promoting Farage I wonder if they are aiming for a Tory/UKIP pact in 2015? It would suit their right wing agenda that's for sure!

LBC enjoys giving a platform to brownshirts and it favours employing sycophantic presenters all too willing to swallow neo-fascist rhetoric whole and unchallenged.

In the event of the Yeses winning Thursday's referendum, will Hadrian's Wall be reinstated?

Will they have to change their internet domain name from .co.uk?

I'm torn on this one. Historically and constitutionally, I think it will be a tragedy to split the UK. On the other hand, imagine the schadenfreude of watching Alex Salmond's vanity project implode as the financial reality begins to bite. And all those Scottish seats vanishing from Parliament.

Good point, g-s. They could exchange co.uk for mc.
