what you experienced was application of an enlightened 'customer focused' store policy.
They could have just repaired
In my case they could have just repaired as the set was over a year old. I was lucky, got rid of a crappy make of TV and got a top quality one, the refund was perfect.
Its when a set is young and it has a problem where the repair/refund/replace issues arise.
The other issue is when a set is out of warrenty does the retailer do the repair FOC.
