Couldn't find a golf thread ( apart from the Ryder Cup one) so thought I would start one

Although the US Open is somewhat overshadowed by the World Cup, we have a European with a healthy lead

Martin Kaymer is 5 shots ahead at the moment

I think he has got a lot of confidence after winning the Players. He is cruising at the moment and If one of the late starters doesn't go low then Kaymer will have a healthy lead going into the weekend.

Kaymer is 8 shots clear now. If it stays like this, don't think many will be tuning in on Sunday for the final round

Yes was watching earlier but the us open will struggle a bit for viewers this year.

Great effort from Kaymer so far

I think it's safe to say Martin is the heavy favourite ;) but the weekend's still to come and depending on how he plays who knows but so far it's looking good ;)

Didn't see much of it with the football five is not a massive lead in the final round of a us open.

Like martin Kaymer but also backed ricky fowler at the start of the week at 70/1

Just checked the odds and Kaymer is 4/11 (hills)

That seems a helluvver price for someone who is 5 shots clear

He's still 4/11 at Hills (1/5 everywhere else I've looked)

Guess they must be trying to balance their books

Martin Kaymer has played like a machine all week - the yanks are having to resort to some "polite applause" at times.:D Don't think they are enjoying this one right now.

Amazing display from Kaymer. Delighted to see him back to his best and also having Craig Connolly on the bag again.

Yes it was and to think barely a month ago it was looking doubtful if he would be in the Ryder cup team

Michael Campbell was a hell of a name drop from the blazer at the presentation. I was waiting on him saying Tiger, Jack etc etc. :)

Campbell won the US Open the last time it was played at Pinehurst No.2.

Convincing win by 8 shots with 7 tied for 2nd. That must make it tricky working out the each way bets.

Terrific performance but it seems to have been swamped by the World Cup

The news story of Martin Kaymer's US Open win should be all over the net and papers. But it is not due to the World Cup.

Fantastic achievement coming back as he has done this season after a indifferent few years of failed swing changes.

Absolute nail on for the Ryder Cup now.

The Open returning to Royal Portrush earliest will be 2019 but depends if on infrastructure work being completed and approved. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-27858157

Good news for Northern Ireland but what happens to The Open Championship if Scotland were to gain independence ? Could a Scottish Open (at St Andrews, Muirfield etc ) become more important than The Open ? ;-)

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club is Scottish. It runs golf (outside the US) and organises the Open. It is already the premier golf tournament in Scotland.

The Scottish Open is a European Tour event held as a qualifier for the Open. It isn't going to be more important than the Open

The real question would be whether Royal Liverpool might be the last English club to host the Open and whether there may be a need to revive the English Open (currently defunct)

Makes sense as he wouldn't be guaranteed a spot in the GB squad.

Still 2 years away, not guaranteed a spot for Ireland either. Thankfully he has stayed with the GUI after they brought him up through all levels of the sport though. Pretty perfect timing for him to announce his decision as the Irish open here in Cork is about tee off.

Strictly speaking, "The Open Championship" has no geographical identifier and as such I don't see independence being an obstacle to it being held in a different country. In everything I read, nothing except tradition identifies it as being a strictly British tournament.

Woods back with 74 , not sure what it will take for the us media to accept that he is done at the highest level

It's too much to expct 2 scores of 65 to 68 immediatrly on return after back injury and 12 weeks out.

It's not realised how difficult it is just to achieve even an even par 2 round score (which of course still misses the cut by a distance (apart from in the US Open and when it's very windy in the open)) after such a lengthy enforced layoff.

Woods will probably never return to the consistentvspectacular level he once did but he is not exactly suddenly sn ordinary PGA Tour journeyman level now
