Voice calls on iPhone 4 sound distorted. FaceTime sound fine??

Hi
A recent thing. Every time someone calls my iPhone 4 I sound like a dalek, or so they say.
Yet I've used my iPhone for FaceTime and the sound is absolutely fine.
I assume that there is only one microphone on the phone, so is this a network issue? I'm on O2.
I called my own number on the iPhone this morning and it is as people say: it sounds just like a dalek.
Any thoughts? How do I fix this?
