I may be overthinking about this but the father's murder could be connected to the main SL. It looks like the SL is the contract and the recipient being murdered hence the involvement of SIS/MI6. The brother knows something I think
I reckon nothing is as it seems (that's usually a fair assumption with Blick). Maggie Gyllenhall accent was almost too good, if you know what I mean, it was a bit too studied.
Looking at the credits, the little boy's name is Kasim Halabi (same surname as Atika). I don't think we were supposed to think that he was the Steins' child. I thought he was conceived when Atika was taken out of that car and presumably raped. I wonder whether his father is involved in the kidnapping? (I mean the kidnapping of Kasim)

At times, shades of Emma Thompson, I thought.
Pretty decent though, obv. put a lot of work into it.

Who is she then? Why is she living with the brother? Is she supposed to be the nanny? She seems far more important then that. All very confusing. Why is Maggie's character initially quite odd with him. She barely notices her nieces.

She had practice - see: Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang (2010)
To be fair, there were a lot of short scenes covering at least three time periods, and quite a few characters and settings. It would certainly bear a second look on the iPlayer.
Fwiw, my sense was the contract was not awarded fairly and Nessa is actually involved with the Palestinians.
To that end, her secure but cell-like sleeping pod seemed a huge clue - poss the consequence of what happened when she was kidnapped.
I think she has a very fragile psyche. There is a lot of personal issues I feel with both her and the brother. Professionally I think she is probably fine.
Well yeah it's clear that what happened 8 years ago (and to her dad) has had an impact. it's not normal, especially for someone portraying themselves as grounded and successful to go and sleep in a panic room. I was just clarifying what the 'secure but cell-like sleeping pod' was.
Random concept.
The little girl looked far more arabic than the woman she grew up to be. I suspect Nessa and Atika have swapped places a long time ago, and Atika is the real sister who saw her father murdered.
It's had good reviews from most critics, but I must admit it didn't grab my attention like Shadow Line. Shadow Line was confusing, but so strange that you couldn't wait to see what would happen next.
It was brave writing to put in the long, dull speech by Maggie Gyllenhaal, that would have killed most dramas stone dead. But she just about pulled it off.
I'm hoping this was just a scene setting episode, introducing the characters and giving us some background. I think it needs to pick up the pace from now on, so far the characters haven't been interesting enough to demand attention when little is actually happening.
I like Maggie, but (so far) she's just been rather dull and photogenic in this. But we know from past experiences with Blick, things are not always what they seem.

My wife said that too!
My random thoughts:
The show started with a radio beacon, and kazim had a voice recording watch. Quite a lot of suggestion about recording/broadcasting throughout.

The little boy who played the brother looked much more middle eastern - at least he had dark hair, rather than fair/ginger - than his adult version. Neither child looked comfortable with the man who was supposed to be their father. Were those children the real offspring?
It's not really a panic room if she sleeps in it every night though.
I like the theories on here. I too thought they were a lesbian couple. I really want to know who's on which side but that's going to happen slowly. Genevieve O'Reilly was a baddie on Spooks, let's see if she continues the trend in this.
I thought Maggie G's accent was really good with occasional tinges of Maggie Smith (with whom she starred in Nanny McPhee 2. Although I thought Miss Gylenhaal's accent was slightly posher in that).

It's called exposition, every drama has it and it's hard to disguise. There are certainly less pretty ways to cover the back story.

The purpose of act 1 is to set the scene.
I admire your confidence in advising Hugo Blix on how he should develop his drama.

We don't know that she sleeps there every night.
Why is it not really a panic room? It was a panic room because that's what very wealthy people have when there's a sustained threat against them. It had no 'every day' stuff, just communications link and a very strong door.

They could be one and the same the way he's playing them.

I think it's a bit more complicated than that.

What were the timers about?
Maggie is really pretty!!
