Apart from the foul language, MBB could be from the 70's.

I wonder how MBB will work as the feature film bearing in mind Brendan's first venture into film making was a financial disaster. It looks like there will be a series 4 at the end of the year.

No, I was referring to the style of the comedy. Over-the-top, larger-than-life, working-class characters and unsubtle comedy. A broad, ensemble piece. Like probably most of the ITV sitcoms of the past (although, not all of them were successful by any stretch of the imagination). As I said, I can see touches of Duty Free in it, And On The Buses. And indeed Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, which was single camera, shot on location with no laughter track.

And unlike Great Night Out, the characters in Benidorm cover a broad age range, giving the series a much broader appeal than GNO.

On the other hand, I have absolutely no idea who Great Night Out is aimed at. And neither do the viewers. That's why they're not watching.

All the adverts I saw presented it as "see what larks and scrapes our chucklesome group of thirty-something pub-going footie-loving lads get up to this week", so if they're aiming it at like minded viewers I imagine most of their core audience would actually be out on a Friday night at 9.

Airing a big epiosde of Corrie just before the awards is always going to help them and them saying they aired it instead of Emmerdale because viewers "expect" an episode on that day is just ridiculous.
Bit of a slap in the face for the Emmerdale team, too. Although, they're probably used to that by now.

I think ITV will be praying for a draw in one of the three FA Cup games tomorrow - at the moment Huddersfield v Leicester is the only replay available to them.

Indeed - I think this is one of those shows which could get a reasonable audience if scheduled correctly in a mid-week slot, but as you say, the core demographic who might watch it are doing other things on a Friday.

Just checking the BBC1 Saturday schedule for next week - no Animal Antics or Secret Service; Pointless Celebrities instead!

Looking at the Channel 5 ratings, it looks like Home and Away is struggling now, with ratings consistently under a million. I can only think of one person who says they've watched it in the last five years and it's a soap that's probably bottom of every soapista's list. While Neighbours does OK considering the massive quiz competition on BBC One and ITV, Home and Away should have it easier being against the news, but it doesn't seem to be delivering.

That's not surprising at all. I'm worried Pointless celebs is going to be burnt out though.

Yes, very slim pickings at the moment.

    - The Chase on Friday 18th January recorded its highest ever rating for a weekday edition: 4.06m (21.1%) excluding +1 and 4.30m (22.3%). Expect the official rating for this past Monday to smash that.

Interesting that The Chase lost share in the officials. In the overnights it had 3.99m (21.2%) and 4.21m (22.4%) inc +1.
    - Pointless was short of it's record high on Friday 18th January by 0.06m, it had 4.34m (21.6%)

The overnight for Pointless was 4.21m (21.5%), so that only gained a tiny bit of share.

Both timeshifted less than usual (70k/90k and 130k - and that includes the breaks being stripped out for The Chase). It seems a lot of usual timeshifters watched live/same day due to the snow. Of course they're all still great figures.

Still likely to do better than ITV's normal Tuesday line-up.

I wouldn't think so. I would think it would be in line with what they usually do.

That Pointless Celebs is a repeat by the way. The rugby is also disrupting schedules / providing excuses for ditching programmes (delete where appropriate) the following Saturday, running right up to 19:00, meaning no room for AA and SS then either. And if I recall correctly the Six Nations goes on for ages.

Incidentally, Channel 5 have a pre-school kids' show called Animal Antics.

It will still do better than there current line up. Six nations does really well. It's one of BBC Sports biggest event's.

I think this is a big reason why Great Night Out has flopped. I'm really enjoying the series, I think it's something a bit different but it's hard to capture a young male audience (which I think is the show's target audience) so Great Night Out was always going to struggle before it even started!

I think it would have been better in a 10.35pm slot on a Monday or Tuesday night.

BBC1 just screened a trailer for Being Eileen. Mun shows an interest. "It's on at 10.30" I tell him. "Well, I won't be watching it, then" says Mum. Yeah, her and the rest of the country.

It really pisses me off when BBC1 screen scripted material in 10.35 slot, particularly when they have so little comedy in peak-viewing. I thought they were cutting that out now that they've had their money cut. Obviously, you didn't cut the licence fee far enough, Tories.

At this point I can see them ordering some more Pointless Celebrities on top of the deal they signed at the end of last year. Animal Antics and Secret Service are just doing what the BBC commissioners wanted - cheap clip shows with some kind of "twist" to the idea to make it look a bit different. Hasn't Animal Antics been kicking about for ages as well?

Going back to late 2011 they were briefing for one big scale teatime show in its "own world" like Wipeout and a bunch of cheap clip shows. The funny thing is the successor to Wipeout, from the same production company, might be ITV's upcoming Prize Island (created by Richard Osman, as it happens). Obviously Endemol were to blame for Don't Scare The Hare as well and that didn't work but I'm not sure that BBC1 have got anything of that kind lined up?

I suppose the alternative is to go towards quizzes if they can be getting 4m+ in teatime slots. And the considerably older Pointless audience is likely to feed far better into Britain's Brightest than what's on just now. Celebrity Perfection or Breakaway next? :D

It's just occurred to me that another possible influence on ITV saying yes to GNO could have been Sky 1's Mad Dogs (itself possibly influenced by the film The Hangover). But of course, what constitutes a ratings hit for Sky1 and what constitutes a ratings hit for ITV are vastly different things.

(Actually, thinking about it, The Hangover could have been another influence on ITV's yes.)

Their best option for Saturday tea-time is

    4.30 Final Score
    5.40 News
6.00 A Question Of Sport (instead of 10.35 on Wednesday.)

ITV now wisely don't start their LE programes on a Saturday until 6pm. Saving money. If the BBC have to do likewise they should cut back on the number of light entertainment programmes they make for Saturdays - seeing as how they're so crap at it.

That's where Mrs Brown's Boys started but seems weird to put Being Eileen there when it debuted as Lapland at 10pm in 2011. And will the people that watched Lapland know this is the same show?

I believe that BE was originally titled Lapland like the pilot (this even bills it as Lapland). At 9pm the same night they've got a repeat of Outnumbered. I'm guessing that BE was destined for the 9pm slot but moved when they decided it wasn't much cop.

Saw that earlier and assumed it had bumped out the Outnumbered repeat. If it's at that time its either a clunker or they want to grow it like Mrs Browns and (hopefully) Citizen Khan. The slot obviously wasn't fatal to either of those.

It is odd not to flag that its basically Lapland. Some may work it out, or recognise that its vaguely familiar, and the daily papers and guides will flag it too. But you think they would have linked it to Lapland in the trail given it was well received and rated quite well.
