Actually, I'm not sure why the Metro had to use such an extravagantly larky tone. Jedward nearly drowned! How amusing!

To be honest, while it must have been scary for their mum, I can't see how you can report this seriously.
• Someone lets Jedward out unattended.
• Jedward walk into the sea.
• Jedward call up their mum and say "Mam! We walked into the sea! AWESOME!".
• Helicopters are scrambled (mostly to drown out the noise if Jedward start singing).

It is quite funny that while a hugely expensive helicopter couldn't find them, a bunch of rescuers just waded into the water. It doesn't read like a high octane scene from Hawaii Five O or Baywatch.
In all seriousness though, the sea can be dangerously deceptive. I nearly drowned in waist high water that had a ridiculously strong undertow and huge waves. They were probably right not risk it.
