    Hmmm....

I'm not really sure to be honest - I was hoping for someone like Alesha and less technical. I feel a bit for Bruno too as he bounced off Alesha really well and they had less inhibitions than the other judges. Just hope the panel isn't too dry, I'll really miss Alesha on SCD!

I found Darcy very bland when she was on the panel as the 5th judge but maybe being a proper part of the judging panel and not a spare part, she will not be so dull. Well I'm hoping anyway.

Amazing how suddenly Alesha has become popular as a judge :D
I guess Karen wasn't chosen because she is too gushy, opinionated and loud.....and we already have those qualities on the judging panel :D

No - Karen wasn't chosen because she is a real-life international ballroom competition champion - the only one to ever appear on this show. The show has always been controlled by stage dancers, and now we have four of them on the panel who know and care nothing about ballroom.

I liked her. I would sooner want the advice of someone like Darcey than another Alesha.

Very underwhelmed by this news - Darcy has next to no personality - and also baffled: how on earth will someone of her standing and background fit in with the more in-yer-face than ever brashness SCD has descended into, with inappropriate music and permanent standing ovations?

Or is this part of a bigger overhaul for the show now that Moira Ross has left?

Nothing against the girl but I don't like this choice for the judging panel : (

Worst guest judge ever, VERY disappointing news. :( People are going ballistic on SCD facebook page :D

Ooh, I think that's a little harsh to say that Darcey has next to no personality.

One of the attributes that made her such a great company member was her ability to fit it. Everyone loved her - the stage crew, her fellow dancers, everyone.

You do need personality to be liked that much. Perhaps it didn't show when Darcey was on the show last time - and I think we should give her a break because it was the first time, and it's not exactly easy on a live show to come up with 10 second soundbites that are useful.

I think you'll see Darcey much more comfortable in the role now she's committed to 4 months of it.

From a technical standpoint, for those worried about that, Darcey isn't fluent in ballroom and so I don't expect her to be critical in a technical way. She's far too modest to assume more knowledge than she has.

She has beaten off stiff competition for this role - and that is partly because of her popularity - important for the BBC - and as I said at the top, I really don't think popular people are lacking in personality, otherwise you'd just walk passed them, wouldn't you ?

I hope this is the start of greater things for Strictly - I personally found last years series very flat.

Karen is far better qualified to judge Ballroom than Darcey, so it indicates that entertainment will continue to be more important than Ballroom rules.

Darcey may have been a much better dancer than Craig or Bruno, but I cant see that making her a better judge than them. We will have to see if Darcey can be entertaining as a judge when given a run at it.

Cheryl. Whilst I agree that Darcey will hopefully grow into the role I have to disagree about her choice being because she is 'popular'. I like & go to see Ballet so I knew who she was when she was guest judge but I would bet a fair amount of money that I was in the minority. She is popular in a niche group. For Saturday night TV I wouldn't class her as popular or well known. I don't think she will attract the column inches that are required.

Thank heavens it isn't Karen Hardy, I liked Darcy as a person and hope she will be a bit more outspoken now she has the job permanently rather than just as a guest.

    Tragic decision. Another charisma vacuum.

Darcey may have seemed a bit dull as a guest judge, but at least she isn't Jennifer Grey! Now she was bad!

I think I will reserve judgement until she has been in the role for a couple of weeks.:)

Quite genuinely surprised by this. After her guess stunt, in which I found her a bit dull and didn't think she added much, I didn't even really consider her as a contender.

Hopefully she'll work better in a four judge panel though.

Anyone forgetting Len? Ballroom judge for a fair few years. And Craig may not specialise but has his infamous eye for detail. Bruno and Alesha were there before, now we have Bruno and Darcey, and if we look at that as the non ballroom perspective, it's still an improvement

whilst I agree with many of the posters here that Darcey came across as very bland, when she was a guest judge,

She must have changed her style to get through the audition to beat both of the other Karens, so I'm going to sit on the fence and give her a chance.;)

she'll be a 100 times better than Alesha as she has dance technical knowledge, will be interesting to see how she incorporates "ballet" technique into her comments

Alesha is quite tall though, isn't she? And she was okay sitting next to Bruno. If you sit behind the judges when they do the show, you can see the number of cushions some of them sit on lol.

Lol, I was just having a little joke about our usual 'height requirements' when it comes to our Strictly people. ;):D

I don't know much about ballet - have never been to a production but even before she was a guest judge I'd heard of her - I'd seen her on various documentaries about dance on the bbc - maybe I'm in a minority too but I think she's credited with poplularising ballet and the BBC seem to like her as they keep on comissioning documentaries around her - the latest one being before Christmas when she and her team of dancers recreated those Hollywood musical routines.

While I would have preferred someone from the Ballroom/Latin world - I guess the BBC want Len to be seen as the 'authority' on that and wanted someone that could bring something different to the panel - I've liked her in the documentaries I've seen so I hope she grows into the role too and does well on Strictly - it could have been a lot worse at least they didn't give the job to the likes of Jennifer Grey  :D

I wonder if they ran auditions/interviews for the post to see who performed best.
    Like in a normal job.
Maybe they ran a few scenarios and tried a few people out on the panel and Darcy fitted in best.

Surely they don't just appoint on a whim - they must test it out first?

Yes they did - it was reported that the choreographer Karen Bruce was screen tested and apparently she did well in the auditions but the reservations from the producers with her was that she wasn't well known enough - which I think is plain silly because presumably Len and co weren't well known when they first auditioned!
