Surely your bank give you a debit card? I got given one when I was 16...

Fair enough. If you pop into an o2 store and explain they'll be able to do it for you, assuming you look your age! Do you not have a passport / driving license either?

As long as you are 18+ you may use someone elses credit card as long as they agree to the £1 charge to remove the bar or why not apply for a credit card yourself again if you are over 18?

    I have just received the SMS from o2 - a one-off £1 to verify with a £2.50 rebate - fair enough...

... but as per the site's spiel, why would you need to age verify again and hence get charged £1 again? Do I get the impression that you may well be charged a quid a time for every 18+ site you visit?

I visit loads of 'not-for-kids' sites - that are not porn but do contain adult content (articles, cartoons, jokes, pics, etc.) - does this mean that I may be charged a quid a time to do this?

For some reason O2 do ask you to prove you're over 18 several times. Its a real pain, because they consider some perfectly innocuous sites (eg some technology forums) as age restricted.
I just use Opera Mini/bolt/UCweb instead of the built in browse as the traffic then doesn't go through O2's proxy and has the advantage of cutting out the bango.net monitoring for advertising.

What's all this about? I'm glad I gave giffgaff the heave ho, if this is the case!

It probably explains O2's reluctance to stay connected to my push mail for more than thirty seconds at a time, too. Vodafone is rock-solid.

I doubt that was the reason. As Vodafone also have 'transparent' proxies etc.
