That's not a Pit Bull in the picture. I think the same can be said for these dogs that are attacking people. They are mixed breeds - usually with mastiff types or other bull breeds.

The Pit Bull Terrier has two major traits that took decades of careful selection in breeding to achieve. The first breed trait is it's tendency to fight other dogs. It is a breed bred for dog fighting. It is of course not the ideal dog to let off a lead. It has been bred to attack and fight other dogs. AS lomg as you keep it on a lead it's no problem on that front.

The second major breed trait is it's tendency not to bite human beings. When a dog fight is in progress the dogs have to be seperated by a person. That has to be done without fear of being bitten. Over the years a dog that bites a handler will either be destroyed or not bred from. Eventually you end up with a breed that doesn't bite people. This has led to them being one of the most stolen breeds in America - as they are so people-friendly that they will allow just about anyone to pick them up and take them away.

The dogs that are attacking people are not Pit Bulls.

The thing is though they were not originally bred to fight. They were bred to bait bulls (and other large animals) in a pit - hence the breed name - American Pit Bull Terrier.

Anyway, here are some positive stories about them - not the usual scaremongering newspaper nonsense:

    This.

    This.

    This.

    This.

    This.

    This.

    This.

    This.

    This.

Shame on them for not letting those people and other animals die or be attacked!

The funny thing is their "typical" reader is most likely a Labour supporter (nowt wrong with that because I am). I think that's amusing as it's a tory rag now, though.;-)

Back to the dogs, I agree they should be banned.

So should Labradors be banned since they are the number one biter in the country?

It's shocking that the Sun are advertising this fact to their tattooed Chav class readers!

As if we haven't got enough of these dangerous killer Staffy pitbull terrier type dog breeds on the streets and in the parks as it is.

The sooner all these "type" dogs are banned the better. >:(

The breeders and chav owners need to be banned from being anywhere near these dogs.

Dogs become nasty because humans make them that way.

    The drug dealer's favourite dog.
Anyway the Sun aren't advertising they're reporting on it.

An earlier post in this thread for you.

Dogs banned 20 years ago still readily available…. So you want to ban more breeds.
I’ll leave you to work out the logical fallacy there…

Back to this vague 'Pit Bull type' classification, that doesn't mean a lot in the real world.
Just needs to look vaguely Staffy like and be of a 'square' shape (body length to height) to qualify IIRC.

Just goes to show you, it is a certain type of person who seems to prefer these breeds.

I like those type of breeds. In the right hands they make wonderful dogs to own. They are intelligent, family orientated, loving, friendly happy dogs. It's only when you get some ignorant moron getting one that they tend not to train and socialise the dog properly or just chose the breed because of it's bite damage and reputation in the media.

The media is as much to blame as the bad owners imo.
They just keep going on about how "aggressive" and "evil" and "devilish" the dogs are, that only makes them even more appealing to the wrong sort of person.

Just to pick up on that...

I think the "Range Rover" analogy is a bit off.

I think the big attraction of these types of dogs is that they're actually pretty small, easy to maintain, breeds.
I mean, if you get yourself a Rottie or a Doberman you're going to have to walk it 5 miles a day and feed it decent food to keep it in shape.
Get yourself some kind of bull-terrier and you can feed it scraps, kick it out in the back yard for a crap and you've still got yourself a badass animal without any of the hassle.

It's kinda like Citroen making a twin-turbo, 500bhp Saxo that's as fast as a Ferrari but can be bought for £500.

That analogy is a more than a bit off.

Watch some of the various animal rescue programs you'll see terriers that have been fed cack and left to languish in back gardens, they look as ill as any other breed left in the same conditions.

Ah we've had this 'devil dog' thing for years, goes in cycles with other Dog fashions.
I remember when it was GSD's then Rotties and Dobermanns, they become the fashion, then like other breeds and world and his wife starts breeding them.

One of my mates Daughters is a serial dog buyer, she's also a serial Dog returner, she must get them on sale or return, they're never around for long.

I personally think its not the dogs as much as the owners not training or taking proper care of the dog, my mum got bitten by a staffy just before christmas just for walking past he jumped on her and bit her hand almost straight through! the owner did a runner and left her needing the hospital!!

    Nah,

For the sort of people who care about this kind of thing, a pit-bull type dog is almost certainly far less effort than any other dog with this same sort of "street cred".

    *EDIT*

Not saying there's anything intrinsically wrong with the dogs, just that I can see why they're the obvious choice for yobs compared to, say, rotties or dobermans etc.

Stick a rottie in a back garden feed it on cack, stick a Staffy in a back garden feed it on cack.
Difference to the owner, buggerall, same effort, still got a mouthful of teeth.
If you want to threaten someone a Rottie/GSD/Dobermann works just as well as a Staffy all are well known guarding/police dogs.
American Bully's, DDB's and Akita's are also popular 'hard dogs' depending on your area.

Best leave this tangent alone now, I think.

Most sensible comment I've seen on here.

I'm a 27 yr old who has quite a good job that I work very hard at. I've got a staffordshire bull terrier and I'm not a "thug". A lot of people are very uneducated about these dogs. I would love you to spend time with mine and you will realise it's the owners who make them aggressive. They can be the most affectionate pet when trained right. His fat head is keeping my feet warm right now.
