Extreme Graphic Content on YouTube

I was looking at a thread on DS last night that posted a link to a blog. On this blog was a link to a YouTube video of, apparently, a man being beheaded. I figured YouTube wouldn't allow such a thing and clicked on it, but there it was.

I reported it immediately and have done again since it's still there, but all that seems to have been done is that it's just been age restricted.

I was wondering where they stood legally?

I would have thought that such a large, high profile site wouldn't be allowed to host a video of a real murder?

The pistol suicide of US Senator Budd Dwyer at a 1987 press conference was fascinating, as was the death of Tommy Cooper-but I wouldn't want to watch anything more graphic than those.

What's the reason for reporting it?

I have inadvertently seen a few horrific videos on there that with hindsight or the benefit of a better description, I'd rather not have and would not have seen. Should they be banned? No, probably not but there ought to be much more overt warnings about the graphic nature of the content.

Incidentally, all that I have seen have been linked from here.

YouTube seem more intent on stopping people posting copyrighted material rather than videos showing murders, etc.

Considering this is what YT is meant for,
Founded in February 2005, YouTube allows billions of people to discover, watch and share originally created videos. YouTube provides a forum for people to connect, inform and inspire others across the globe and acts as a distribution platform for original-content creators and advertisers, large and small. See our company timeline for more information on our company history

I'm surprised they let murder videos like the one described be posted.

You want to know why I reported a video of a man having his head cut off with a knife ?

I watched that one, and like you I wouldn't want to see anything more graphic. I think the two men one hammer video used to be on youtube. No idea if it still is but I could never watch something like that.

If the rights to the backing music were owned by Sony they'd have been on it like a shot.

I'm sure this violates youtube terms.

The song Hey Man, Nice Shot by the band Filter is about the Dwyer suicide.

Maybe if I report it as copyright infringement they might take notice ..

It's got over four and a half thousand views as well.

Are you sure it wasn't Lady Gaga's new music video?

'Video nasties' are allowable under the banner of reportage, and rightly so IMO. Otherwise we are disallowed from acting as 'first witnesses' and instead have to rely on the words of those who have seen the footage somehow. And if we do deny such reportage how and where do we draw the line? The assassination of JFK is surely a matter for public disection, as are such videos as the 'Collateral Murder' committed by US soldiers in Iraq.

I've seen the Dwyer suicide video, which disturbed my thoughts for many days afterwards. Would I have it removed? No. Would I have a strongly worded warning popping up requiring the viewer's consent to watch such videos in the full knowledge of what they're about to see? Very definitely!

Well you've clearly missed the rhetorical nature of my question so i'll leave it there.

Same. I won't click on a link if I don't know what's in it, and even then people could lie or play down the content.

People who post a link and nothing else annoy me to no end.

People said the same thing in the 80s. And the 70s. And the 60s. And the 50s...

Hell, even the Edwardians thought everything was going down the pan and 'standards were falling' since old Victoria's day.

I'd prefer money, but if it's only a pat then I'll take it if it means the video is removed.

I suspect that Youtube will be put behind a filter at some point that will require some means of age verification, as it is impossible to check every video before it is 'published.'

Someone once posted an extreme image on a theatre website (large, reputable but it was in the process of change and didn't have proper blocks for a few days in between) that I used to read. The image came up automatically when I clicked on the site and it was so extreme it took my eyes a moment to adjust to what it was. I still wish I hadn't seen it and it was years ago. Why someone would do that just because they can I have no idea.

I've also experienced having to see things I wouldn't choose to and it can be genuinely upsetting. Some people are just arseholes, I guess. I hate them.

Apparently, since it's been "age restricted", it's 'exempt' from removal ..

i do as well. seen enough of it over the years to have no real desire to see any more. i think the only reason i clicked on that link in the first place was really because i thought "surely not?".

Knowing how quick they are to take down copyrighted content and porn, I thought they surely wouldn't allow something like this to stay up.
