Who Is The Target Audience For Fifty Shades Of Grey

It seems that Fifty Shades Of Grey is going to be an adult chick flick. So far people I have spoken to seem to be saying that its women who are going to flock to this with their female friends. Almost like a hen night movie. But the valentines weekend opening seems to suggest that the makers of the film are targeting couples flocking to see it. So who exactly is it aimed at? Both my wife and I are not really bothered about seeing it. Whatever happens it will almost certainly be the biggest grossing 18 film of all time. It actually reminds me of the 1970's when X rated adult films opened almost on a weekly basis. It particularly reminds of when The Stud came out in 1978. Based on a best selling adult novel. This caused a huge sensation as a 40 year old Joan Collins was appearing in raunchy scenes. Back then there was another target audience. The thrill seeking teenager! It was a film that lots of under 18's sneaked in to see. I know because I was one of them! Back then it was easy. You just walked in and the cashier would ask your age. All you had to do was say 18 and you were in! Now of course the under 18's will have trouble getting in. So that audience will be lost. So who are you going to see it? and who with? Your other half or a friend?

Probably the same women who go goo-goo over the likes of Benedict Cumberbatch, and rush here to tell the world when they slide off their seat.

    Women.

I'll be surprised if any men go to see it, although, undoubtedly, there will be some men without spines that will go just to keep the peace in some instances.

I guess it is going to be aimed at the curious, the people who have read the book, couples, but primarily that same section of the public that will go and see the latest movie that everyone has been talking about.

And I notice the publicity people have been working overdrive as well...

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/11400246/BandQ-sends-Fifty-Shades-of-Grey-memo-warning-staff-to-expect-soar-in-demand-for-cable-ties-and-rope.html

though unsurprisingly this has since been 'outed'...

    http://www.theguardian.com/business/2015/feb/11/bq-say-fifty-shades-of-grey-run-on-duct-tape-alert-was-just-pr-ruse

and this one also surfaced today...

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-31428072

    Quite ludicrous to be honest...

Anyone - including couples - over 18. The same type that saw 9 1/2 Weeks, Wild Orchid, Showgirls, Deep Throat, Last Tango in Paris, Emmanuelle and blah blah.

Doesn't take much to work that out.

A typically sober summing up from Screendaily:
Similar to raunchy R-rated sex comedies, Fifty Shades pretends to be transgressive when it’s really an endorsement of traditional, conservative romantic tendencies. But that fact shouldn’t diminish the real chances the film takes. Sadomasochism and bondage are surely more complicated and less airbrushed than they are in Fifty Shades, but the filmmakers’ commitment to allow at least a little kink through Hollywood’s closed door gives this imperfect movie a kick.
Seems more tied to convention than some might think.

I've liked some of Taylor-Johnson's art in the past, but this whole 50 Shades business bores me stupid frankly. A rental perhaps.

I hear France have labelled it suitable for 12 year olds to see.

    Raunchy.

I would say; middle aged women who, actually, have no interest in sex whatsoever but like the fantasy of a rich man buying them things.

Single women without a date on Valentine's day or middle-aged women in sexless relationships, would be my guess. God, I'd hate to be the poor sod who has to clean the seats after the showing

I think there will be a lot of others going to see it just to see 'what all the fuss is about'.

And I think you and the vast majority of such people are going to be vastly disappointed.

Even before this film was made, you could see what was going to happen - it was never going to contain any controversial scenes, raunchy sex or full-on bondage action. It does not need to.

The filmmakers know full well the movie can be sold off the back of the reputation of the book. As rubbish as the book was, it did sell and became a talking point.

It's a very cynical marketing ploy, and essentially is cheating it's potential audience, teasing them in the belief they are going to see something they are not.

Early reviews have already confirmed this, which has comes as no surprise, so expect this movie to get absolutely trashed on here.

I have no idea. I just know it's not aimed at a 32 year old pregnant woman. So I wont be going to see it.

True, I suppose. A few mouseclicks and you're well sorted these days.

However, maybe this audience doesn't want to dip their toe in the horrid world of porn (urghh!).

But they're not averse to porn (or something porn-ish) dipping its toe into their world, so to speak. As long as its presentable, acceptable etc.

You seem to be far more up with the porn of today, so I'll take your word for it. I prefer to get my jollies from wifey.
