Sounds to me like it was indeed a dry socket. It is excruciatingly painful ..... I had one years ago when I was a smoker and didn't listen to the advice about not smoking.
I have never had pain like that and it lasted nearly a month.

I believe a "dry socket" is just another turn of phrase for "infected" socket.
Probably right, it hurt whatever its called!
Oh I know that! I had one after having a wisdom tooth removed a few years back.
