RED and black striped menace Dennis has apparently seen the error of his ways ... if his new BBC makeover is to be believed.

    http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/mysun/2583916/BBC-menace-to-change-Dennis.html

I really hope this isn't true, it was bad enough when the nannystate cut Tom & Jerry but this really takes the pi**.

If this story is true then it is a pathetic reflection of society. The whole idea of the character is that he is a 'Menace'. This is about as daft as when the BBC wrote Friar Tuck out of Robin Hood in case anyone was offended. I note that series did not prosper!

    Sun's Beano fans
Says it all really, doesn't it. :D
It's absolutely outrageous! Growing up, I read the Beano and got the annual every year at Christmas with Dennis the Menace, the Bash Street Kids and others all getting up to no good. It never did me any harm.
Hmmm, perhaps not. Oh, hang on, what's that you say?
Soon we won't be able to breathe without it being bad for children!
    :D:D:D
If reading the Beano leads to that mentality, let's ban it!!!!1

That was a joke, btw, I loved the Beano as a kid. :)

I used to love my comics in my youth (late 60's/early 70's) and Dennis The Menace/ Desperate Dan/ Minnie The Minx/ The Bash Street Kids....etc they all had a good bit of violence and insults in them. All this PC crap nowadays is bloody ridiculous......kids aren't going to be affected by a comic-strip, for God's sake! They can find more interesting stuff on the internet!!:)

Allow me to show you the truth.
http://www.beanotown.com - you can download a trail copy of The Beano for free, it includes a Dennis strip in the new style, and yes, he's as menacing as ever, although I've seen the joke about cutting down plants by throwing food like a frisbee before.
Also http://www.dennisandgnasher.com - Look at the text which appears when you hover over Dennis and Gnasher's pictures at the top of the page. Says Dennis is the biggest menace in Beanotown, or any town. You can also watch a trailer for the TV series.

In short, The Sun's article was talking absolute bollocks.

Plus, the writers for the TV series aren't the same people who write for the comic. So even if Dennis's TV antics aren't up to people's expectations, you can be sure that the comic version will continue to do fine.

I saw it in the Daily Mail and I'm kind of guessing that they made up all the 'political correctness gone MAD!!!!!!' stuff.
Say, whoever was writing it saw that Walter wasn't in it and decided 'they must not want to upset gays!' Then they saw that Dennis wouldn't be getting beaten with a slipper until he cried (which by the way, didn't happen once when I used to read it in the 90s, they stopped it ages ago) and thought 'gosh! the BBC would rather not show child abuse on a kids TV show! Political correctness gone maddddddddddd!'
Which confuses me. Because I'm pretty sure the Daily Mail had some kind of campaign to make it illegal for parents to hit their children even when they'd been naughty. So why are they so outraged that a kids show won't be showing this?

You know whose opinion I'd love to hear on this? Richard Littlejohn. His views are always fair and not at all ridiculous or offensive.

I'm sure you like Mr Littlejohn, but in fairness his opinion on it will be no more or less relevant than yours or mine.

Ben Gray, now THAT I'd like to hear.

Who's Ben Gray? Euan Kerr, the former Beano editor, is someone whose opinion I'd like to hear.

You might actually get an honest answer out of Euan, which is true, but for the 'it'll never happen, but I'd like to know his opinion' stakes, Ben Gray is right up there for me. Apparently he's one of the directors who initiated the new cartoon, and sanctioned the 'new dennis' across the board.

    I don't, I can't stand the man :p
I just know that on hearing this story he'll be straight on it, complaining about 'political correctness gone mad!' and generally being offensive.

I would rather hear what Euan Kerr has to say.
Did anyone watch the old show? I used to love it as a kid. I just think they might as well not bother with the new one, if they're going to change it so much. Apparently it's going be about them 'inventing all sorts of things that get them into all sorts of trouble'. So why not just make a new show about a clever kid who invents stuff, and use that?
I want to watch the old show again, now.

That false description was based on the one episode available on the animators' website. http://www.redkite-animation.com/index.php?page=dennis

I've found an episode of the 1996 version on Youtube - The Secret Diary:

DS, please get your facts right! http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/comics/a173733/dc-thomson-to-revamp-the-beano.html

The following mistakes in this article about a Beano revamp:

The publication will be given an overhaul from August 29, relaunching as a 32-page weekly - it's been a 32 page weekly since 1998.

In addition to the revitalised book, the publisher is bringing the comic into the digital age, launching two affiliated websites. The online subsidiaries - dennisandgnasher.com and beanotown.com - will serve as an interactive accompaniment and host issues of Digital Beano. - Beanotown.com launched in 2000. There's only one online Beano, a free trial issue, there won't be multiple issues.

"Our ultimate aim is to engage a whole new generation of Beano fans with a fresh approach to our core characters," they said. "We also hope to excite existing and lapsed fans, particularly parents who may have enjoyed The Beano themselves." - who said? And that sounds like they're marketing it at grown-ups, I don't think so somehow.

What you clearly implied that was changing him away from his bullying, pea-shooting image would make him 'Colin the Conscientious', i.e. boring and goody goody, which is why I answered as such.

As KnowAll27 has done subsequently, there is the implication that modifying him destroys the character and leaves him unable to be a 'menace'. It does not mean this, that's a non-sequitur. This is a character who arbitrarily bullies and actually assaults people. The idea that some modification would be involved at some point is bloody obvious.

Thats the problem in todays world BLAME BLAME BLAME yoiu cant do this you cant do that you cant do this or that incase you offend foreigners. Christ whatever happened to saying what you want when you want. Ypou cant have Dennis bullying or being horrible because of the kids watching. Whatever happened to controlling your own actions?

Its always parents blaming TV or computer games when if they had prought their kids up in the first place stabbing and stuff wouldnt happen.

Instead of changing Dennis, they changed Walter. He used to be this teddy bear loving, effeminate, wimp. But nowadays, he's not averse to spraying perfume at Dennis, or making Dennis's own weapons backfire. He's got a more malicious streak now, although he prefers cunning to brawn. He's actually become more like Chips, the enemy of Bully Beef from The Dandy. Also, the cartoon made him taller than Dennis.

If Walter is more malicious, Dennis's behaviour can be seen as rivalry rather than bullying. Though that didn't stop The Dandy bringing back Bully Beef and Chips not long ago!
