Who IS the biggest broadcaster in the UK

The BBC, time and time again, keep saying that BSkyB is the biggest broadcaster in the UK (Peston was just at it again not 2 minutes ago) yet on their own website they claim to be the biggest broadcaster in the world.

I'm confused, I assume they must mean by income. I can see that the beeb are bigger worldwide but cannot see other than on income that Sky is bigger than the BBC in the UK. They really seem to be making a huge point of it.

    Number of channels?

    Number of hours of broadcasting?

    Spending power?

If the BBC were bigger then theyd have more sporting rights, as it is Sky have virtually all the sporting rights they are allowed to bid for.

And they get the majority of new movies as well to be broadcast first, at least a year before they are broadcast on free to air TV.

Sky also own and control the platform, the distribution of boxes and the encryption/subscription system.
In terms of barrier to entry anyone else wanting to start a satellite broadcasting system in the UK would have a huge job. They'd have to start from scratch selling boxes/dishes and get people to buy them. For that they'd need channels with content that people would want to pay for, but it would take years before enough people had boxes to enable those channels to make a profit. It took Sky years to reach that point, and they had to buy their only competition to do so.

That platform, and the base that provides to expand into interactive services, home shopping, broadband, PPV, etc is something the BBC just don't have.
The BBC have, by choice, made Freeview an open platform without a subscription or encoding function. The BBC have sought to ensure it remains FTA.

BBC by audience share for its channels (by a country mile over Sky's own channels).

    Sky by revenue.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/aboutthebbc/purpose/what.shtml

"The BBC is the largest broadcasting organisation in the world. Its mission is to enrich people's lives with programmes that inform, educate and entertain.

It is a public service broadcaster, established by a Royal Charter and funded by the licence fee that is paid by UK households.

The BBC uses the income from the licence fee to provide services including 8 national TV channels plus regional programming, 10 national radio stations, 40 local radio stations and an extensive website.

BBC World Service broadcasts to the world on radio, on TV and online, providing news and information in 32 languages. It is funded by a government grant, not from the licence fee".

It is simple to be the largest broadcaster in the world, in terms of countries served, languages broadcast in, range of areas such as TV, radio, web etc but at the same time be the second biggest broadcaster in the UK.
Sky is much bigger financially, and controls the platform/encryption/subscription/EPG etc but chooses to make a far narrower range of output and far less original drama, comedy etc. It is obvious that Sky can outbid the BBC for any event or rights it wants, subject to regulations.

If the BSkyB takeover goes ahead then the News Corp worldwide TV operation, Fox in the US, Star TV with 300 million viewers in Asia etc will be huge.

I won't copy and paste the previous huge post but we are comparing the BBC to BSkyB, not all the other News Corp assets.

The BBC keep saying that BSkyB are the biggest broadcaster in the UK but I think we agree they are but only based on income.
