Anyone been to Izmir ?

Hi all,
My Dad phoned me up last night with a massive surprise, he has booked us a photography holiday in Izmir for the end of next March on a 8 day tour of the Aegean Coast, that includes a trip to the Temple of Artemis. Now considering that this is my first ever time to Turkey, I was wondering if anyone here has been to Izmir & what it is like for eating out as well as any other tips ?. My Dad is diabetic & has to be careful with what he eats, but I am extremely adventurous when it comes to trying regional dishes.
