I would put Whitney Houston above Mariah Carey. She has always been more powerful and Mariah's voice has been in decline for about 12 years and she now sounds terribly croaky. Whitney has lost her power as well but at least her tone hasn't altered.

Actually I'd say it's the other way around... Whitney's tone has changed a lot since her first album, whereas Mariah's is still quite similar.

Remember "powerful" doesn't necessarily mean unique. There's plenty of singers out there who are brilliant singers, but they're not unique. You could probably tell who they were, but there's loads of people who sound very similar.

And Official Diva have you heard Whitney's voice lately. I dont want to be mean but Whitney sounds dreadful now. If you saw any footage from her last tour you would see what I'm talking about.

I wouldn't say that Mariah is unique. Leona sounds very similar. Unique is really about having a voice that is different, not necessarily being the best singer with the best range.

Sarah McLachlan has a unique voice.

Came here to post this. One of the most distinctive voices ever, surely.

I'd say Mariah's voice is unique. Leona and other singers of this generation only sound like Mariah because they try and copy her whisper style of singing. If you took that way from Leona, she sounds nothing like Mariah because Mariah's voice is naturally very soulful.

For some reason, I love listening to Ke$ha's voice. I think MJ's is unique and great.
