I'm surprised no one has mentioned Winona Ryder (unless I missed it :D)

I know she has clawed back some minor success in recent years and is steadily working (I think she has a Netflix show coming out later this year), but she really was a bit of a punchline in Hollywood for a while after her shoplifting trial, especially considering how popular she was in the late 80s/early 90s.

It seems likely that some hollywood child actors were subject to Savile-like attentions from numbers of well connected hollywood paedophiles which may explain Driscoll's and other young players descent into misery.

It is alleged that a hollywood paedophile networks exists now.

Talking of such, Bill Tilden, one of the greatest ever tennis players, world No. 1 from 1920-25 and winner of 10 Grand Slams but with a weakness for pretty ball boys, arrested and jailed a few times for indecent behaviour, and in 1946 for " having sex with a 14 year old in a movng vehicle " [ not quite sure if that was a traffic violation or a sex offence ] .

To be fair, his prediliction didn't really harm his career nor lead to his downfall as the offences took place after his career peak. F

Far from being a voracious sexual predator his paternal friendships with the boys were seen as more platonic than anything else, and unlike Savile, even for a known paedophile, no-one really had a bad word to say about him , he was inducted into the Tennis Hall Of Fame in 1959.

Also shortly before that Girl Interrupted was meant to be a star vehicle for her, instead a little known actress called Angelina Jolie stole the film and won an Oscar.

He is still directing independent films and still endangering his cast and crew with his reckless disregard for safety in pursuit of the best shot.

Crazy! How is he getting away with that in this day and age?

Didn't former child star Corey Feldman claim he was "surrounded by paedophiles" as a youngster working in the industry? It was a few years ago now but it seemed like he was on the verge of blowing the lid off of Hollywood and then went completely silent. Like he was paid off, perhaps.

Wasn't there at least one major name.

If I recall right it wasn't a actor (Although Actors were involved) but more hinted at to be a Director or something he did use the phrase "The Casting Couch exists for children to"

A big fall from grace to much of the public for sure. Not a surprise for those who knew anything about cycling and the fact that Mr. Armstrong hooked up with Michele Ferrari, defender of EPO. Lie with dogs and you get fleas. Full of juicy blood too.

The shoplifting thing got blown up so big because everyone hated her so much. Everyone in Hollywood and the media was waiting for her to fail or have a scandal. Times like that you need to have built up some goodwill!

Why did people hate her? I was only little back then but in terms of her career she'd been highly successful until the shoplifting scandal so people liked her enough to watch her films.

It does seem like the shop lifting thing was blown out of proportion by today's celeb antics standards.

    Speaking of actresses everyone hates....

Paz De La Huerta. A few years ago, she got a role in "Boardwalk Empire", and she
was featured in numerous magazine features promoting her as a "big new star".

But she soon alienated everyone with her narcissistic and nasty actions. The media
was soon filled with horror stories about her Divier-Than-Divaish behaviour (trying to
force her way into Golden Globe parties, getting excessive lip injections).
She was charged with assaulting another actress:

"Nurse 3D", the horror film that was supposed to make Paz a star, was a flop. Paz was last heard of suing the film-makers for "ruining her career" (she should have sued herself! :D )

Daniella Westbrook and those septum photos ...

Paul Reubens and his indecent exposure charges

Isaiah Washington's public image took a big hit when he was sacked from Grey's Anatomy for making homophobic remarks to another cast member

    PJ Proby

Would also say Alex Cox. After Repo Man he was considered an up and coming director, Hollywood came calling, got a big budget film and blew it. Back to obscurity

Maybe not the biggest falls from grace in history, but there's a tonne of household name soap actors who've gone down the pan:

Peter Adamson who played Len Fairclough in Coronation Street was arrested for an indecent assualt on two girls where he had been working as a part time instructor. He was found not guilty, but sacked from Coronation Street after selling stories about fellow cast members to the press to fund his trial. He took the sacking very hard an became an alcoholic, in a very sad case of life imitating art. He died in 2002 of stomach cancer, living in a council flat and in serious debt. If ever there was an argument for anonymity of accused in criminal trials this is a good one, be even stronger if he hadn't compromised his position by selling the stories though.

Leslie Grantham who played Den Watts has the distinction of being convicted of murder before his famous roles, he killed a cab driver in 1966 while serving in the army in Germany serving ten years for it. Having re-built his life and playing one of EastEnders most iconic characters in Den Watts. When he returned to the show in 2004 he was discovered to be doing online sex shows from his dressing room at Elstree studies but more worryingly revealed he had sexual feelings for animals and insulted a whole host of fellow eastenders actors.

Ricky Norwood who played Fatboy (Arthur Chubb) in EastEnders was axed from the show this year. He had previously been suspended after a online Skype sex-chat in which he smoked dope. Most young characters in EastEnders leave rather than die, so it doesn't take a genius to figure out why he was killed.

Bruce Jones who played Les Battersby in Coronation Street was suspended from Coronation Street for getting pissed with an undercover reporter and spilling the beans on future storylines. He's managed to keep his career going, but has absolutely no chance of returning as Les Battersby. Also in vast amounts of debt.

Warren Jackson who played Nick Tilsey untl he was 16 became a drug and alcohol addict after being sacked while sitting his GCSES and was replaced by hunk Adam Rickett.

Kevin Kennedy who played Curly Watts in Corrie has been battling alcoholism for a fair while.

Michael Le Vell who despite being a functioning alcoholic and going on trial for sexual offences - for which he was cleared - is still playing Kevin in Corrie..

Kevin Lloyd who played Tosh in the Bill declined into an alcoholic dying at the young age of 49 in 1998 almost immediately after being fired for incompetence resulting from his addiction.

Lynne Perrie who played Ivy Tilsey in Coronation Street was sacked for appearance altering surgery. After she died she became the subject of press oariahism and the infamous documentary The Ghost of Ivy Tilsey. Again alcoholism played it's part with her drunken appearances on television the subject of much mockery and consternation.

Paul Nicholls who played EastEnders Joe Wicks was caught smoking crack cocaine last year, having struggled with drinks and drugs earlier in life

Martyn Lines (arrested for rape), Casey Moss, Chris Hargreaves (arrested for cannabis in garage), Ryan Thomas, Jenson Buchannan, Roger Danuarta, Babara Knox and Bill Roach are among the soap actors to be arrested for various offences.

He was the first person I thought of.
Perhaps not in the same league but there was also Jennifer Moss who was in Coronation Street in the early years. She battled alcohol problems, drugs, depression, debt and appeared in court on shoplifting charges. She died 10 years ago at the age of 61.

Eastemders Darling. No 1 pop star. Movie star potential.

Chucked it all away with aplomb.

Gosh, she's absolutely infamous. The general public found her/her acting/her image very likeable but she was at one stage one of the most hated women in the industry. Just a vindictive, demanding diva whose real behaviour was at odds with her persona.
Cosmo once published an article titled "the bitchiest girl in Hollywood" (it's on Google) which is about her, anonymously.

I remember reading some stuff that suggested as much. Wonder if she's learned to be a bit more humble nowadays?

Another one I thought of was Tonya Harding. According to Wikipedia there's two operas based on her attack on Nancy Kerrigan!

Paul Reubens and his indecent exposure charges

I , and many others, his career slowly recovered, thought he was unfairly castigated, cracking one off in a darkened porn cinema is at the very lower end of the charge of " indecent exposure ".

i.e. he was having a wank in a place where wanking is to be expected, surrounded by other *******, where's the crime ?

Frances Farmer...I'm surprised nobody has mentioned her.

Jessica Lange managed an almost-credible portrayal of her downfall but out of the two or three bio-pics made of Farmer's life to date none have truly captured the horror of what happened to her. Her own auto-bio 'Will There Really be a Morning' is an eye-opener into how people like her - especially women - who were highly strung rather than mentally ill were treated back then. Her detailing of the treatment of women in the asylums was stomach churning - an issue that American authorities have chosen to ignore.

And just when she was getting it together in later life she was diagnosed with throat cancer :(
