Selling out of the pre-order stock allocation is not the same as "delayed the release AGAIN" though.
It's not been delayed... People have successfully ordered it online SIM free for delivery on the 24th, while others have reserved it for collection at an Apple Store on the 24th.

this whole pick up thing is confusing, i got a confirmation email saying i can pick it up from 8am on June 24th and that it will be held for 1 day, but then it says down the bottom (grey small pring), that its on a first come first served basis

Well, I'm going to play it safe & queue up anyway...

Maybe there will be 2 different queues?
I'm going to get there early, there will either be a big queue or I'll be the only one standing there!
Unfortunately, the short answer is yes. Having a phone "reserved" is no guarantee there will be one there.
Sadly, I have been there before. They would hope that they will get enough stock to fulfil everyone's order. The reality is there may simply not be enough stock to go round, so it will be allocated on a proportional basis.
Which means there is a chance that there won't be enough phones in each store, hence the first come, first served.

so what was the point in apple saying "2 great ways to order your iPhone, when infact reserving in store doesnt mean anything and my confirmation email says the stock will be held till closing time on the 24th of june, so its very misleading if what your saying is right.
Think i will phone the store and find out tomorrow.
Not sure i want to stand in a massive que on my day off and be left dissappointed over a phone

let me know how you get on wontcha?!
If they have let too many people reserve, then people are gonna be disappointed.
I phoned the Southampton store today to ask the same question as I am supposed to be working in the morning. I asked as I have a phone reserved, would it still be there if I turn up at 2pm. He said that they have a list of all reserved phones and if there is enough stock it would be there. BUT, if there is not enough it would be on a first come system for the people on the reserved list. Anyone else would probably not even get a look in as priority will go to the reserved list. He also added that Apple cover themselves by the small print on the reservation confirmation email.
Looks like it will be advisable for those with reserved phones to get to their stores as early as possible, everyone else, who can say!!!
I have mine reserved to pick-up from store. Think I'll be getting there around 6:30am. Not sure if the Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield opens any earlier...

That early? Better make sure i get up extra early. Not sure when all these shopping centres open though.

I know the McDonalds in the food court opens at 6:30am in the shopping centre so the main hallway areas should be open from then onwards. I have emailed Meadowhall customer care asking what time the main area opens.

6.30? didn't know that, shall be there at that time then
Queued at my local o2 store for about 2 hours this morning. By ten to eight there were over 100 of us. They then came out to tell us they had 10 16 gig handsets and 5 32 gig handsets. Absolutely shocking customer services. Why leave a big sign outside your store advertising the phone and advising people to 'queue here' when your stock levels are that low.

I suspect there will be limited amounts available on launch day.

Well there's not going to be unlimited amounts available is there?
Indeed not. It was a gentle way of saying don't get your hopes up, even those that have pre - ordered.
When the 3g was released, about seven months after the original iPhone one of the partner suppliers was taking pre-orders.
Expecting at least the 25 to fulfill the orders to be delivered to the store the night before, they actually received 2.
