Do you think the Tories shot themselves in the foot picking David Cameron as leader over David Davis?

No, David Davis is not PM material, imo of course.

Some of his red-meat opinions would keep the right wing happier, but he's absolutely awful on the presentational front.

Remember it was his bumbling speech that lost him the contest.

Biggest homophobe than anyone else.

IMHO he's not fit to be on the shadow cabinet, let alone PM.

He isn't in the shadow cabinet, so you should be happy.

Huh. Frankly I'm not sure who is and isn't - I guess that's a failing on my part.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Davis_(British_politician)#Civil_liberties

"On 12 June 2008, in a surprise and controversial move, Davis announced his intention to resign as an MP, and was immediately replaced as Shadow Home Secretary. This was in order to force a by-election in his seat, for which he intended to seek re-election by mounting a specific campaign designed to provoke wider public debate about the erosion of civil liberties in the United Kingdom. Following his formal resignation as an MP on 18 June 2008,[1] he officially became the Conservative candidate in the resulting by-election and won it on 10 July 2008."

He resigned over Civil Liberties ?
He obviously has a very strange idea about Civil Liberties.
I guess he's never equated Gay Rights and Civil Liberties.

    What a strange person.

Perhaps he should look at his Gay Rights voting record, and again resign - this time permanently.:)

Yep, that's right. Re elected to Parliament, but no longer a Shadow Minister.

Disgusting record. There's still many like that in the Tory party who would come crawling out of the woodwork if they ever got in again.

I personally think Davis is slightly unhinged - that bizzare by-election said it all.

Perhaps we should be asking who will lead the Torys if they loose this election.

I would suggest William Hague gets a 2nd chance.

I wish you hadn't said that.

    Williams Hague, another homophobe.

A homophobe until 2003. Perhaps he had a vision from God :D

I haven't gone through the entire shadow cabinet - perhaps I'll post these just before May 6th !!

Is it just my prejudiced view or is David Davies struggling on the Politics Show now?

He literally looks like he's on the back foot all of the time with poor responses to Andrew Neil's questions

That was one of the barmiest things I've ever heard of in British politics. Did anyone get the point of it?

It goes to show the problems Camerons had in trying to get a party that's naturaly backwards to try & show that its not stuck in the dark ages. New labour has for 13 years been all about trying to make the tories look nasty, outdated & unelectable. I am convinced that its never been about making life for gays better, but all about putting the boot into the tories & making them accept some pretty tough medicine , knowing fulll well if one of them so much rails against it all , out will come 'homophobes' etc, just like they do with immigration. Pretty sad stuff that different thoughts & views are being stifled.

If Thatcher was determined to smash the Labour party , then its bastardised offspring has inflicted more of a beating on the tories than they can ever imagine.

    :)
