Hi everyone,
I currently only game on the xbox 360 (mainly FPS or role play games). TBH I'm getting pretty bored of the games out there. For instance, GTA V looked great at first but I just get bored pretty quickly. I'm not putting down GTA, just think it's not my type of game.
Personally I'm into strategy based games and fancied giving the likes of Starcraft 2 and Rome; total war ago.
I currently have a macbook pro (2009 model) and have realised that most of the games are not available on mac. So I'm in the market for a PC but am unsure of what spec I really need.
I only intend to play the type of strategy games mentioned above and will leave the first person shooters and role playing games to the xbox. So do I really need a high spec PC to run these sorts of games? Should I build my own PC or just buy one?
I would be grateful is someone in the know could educate me on the specs that I need and make recommendations. I'm only looking to spend up to £500.
Cheers

You might be able to save some money by building your own but that's not far off the spec of the gaming PC I built myself about 2 years ago, which still plays most things fine at 1080P.
Oh, that's just for the base unit, doesn't include monitor, mouse, keyboard etc.

Its definitely worth giving FPS's a try on the PC. Once you have tasted keyboard and mouse control, you will never go back to gamepad.
I currently have a BenQ RL2455HM 24 inch 1080p Full HD LED Monitor. Hopefully this should be adequate for PC gaming?
In regards to building a PC, how much realistically does one save in cost?
From my experience you don't really save much at all. Maybe £50 max if you really shop around hard. The main benefit is from being able to choose exactly what you want in your rig. Its not really worth the effort in my opinion, especially when you factor in the extra time and effort, and having to fix any issues yourself.
Yeah you're OK monitor wise.
Spec wise it's a tough call. On one hand the sort of games you want to play don't take much power now, but in a few years it may be a different story... Building your own is cheaper by far but it's a faff not only in building, but it buying too. part picker is a great website as it shows you what is compatible with what, but to save cash you end up ordering from 5 or 6 suppliers. You can buy a semi decent PC for £500. Try overclockers.
Well obviously a £1k PC is going to perform better than a £500 pc. However what this means in the real world is that whilst both will run pretty much any game that comes out now on high settings, the £500 PC wont last as long before games start coming out that require you to scale them down to medium, etc.
Even on medium they will still look better than console.
