Is tea just tea?

I'm not talking about the specialist stuff, like Earl Grey, Orange Pico, etc., but just the stuff you buy in teabags.

Out shopping earlier today, and I bought a box of Typhoo, and a box of Lancashire teabags.

I've already got a box of Tetley bags.

I intend to try a little experiment, by giving my visitors brews made with the different brands, when they visit (maybe even for different brews, during the same visit), to see if they react to the different tastes.

So, my question is, do you have a particular brand you use, or do you just get the cheapest/first one you see?

Do you think you would even notice, if someone switched the teabags in your caddie?

Not too sure really. It's possible they do that thing where one company makes t-bags for lots of others but somehow I doubt it - as I know I can't abide PG Tips (appar the nations fave  or at least was anyway :o)

My faves are the Twinnings yellow box advertised by Stephen Fry at one time. I also like their English Breakfast and Afternoon t-bags. Failing that, good ole Tetley will do, or QuickBrew even. M&S extra strong t-bags are v.good too.:)

I like PG Tips best, and Yorkshire Tea. I do notice when I am served something other - most notably Tetley because I dislike the blend or teas that although made to normal strength, don't seem as flavourful.
Single estate teas, like Assam or Darjeeling can be interesting to try - but I still prefer my PG Tips!

I can taste the difference with some teas, because i dont like the "posh" tea bags someone buys at work.

I find PG Tips teabags have a lot of 'dust' and leave bits in the drink which I don't like.

My favourite is Typhoo, I think it tastes so much nicer than other tea bags (I bought a bag of around 400 a few weeks ago, so I hope my tastes don't change for a while!)

personally I think it depends what sort of water you have as well as the teabags or tea
I really like Yorkshire tea which only needs one teabag in a small pot instead of two, this makes two decent cups

But if i'm in a soft water area the yorkshire tastes different - not dreadful but different

Tetley and PG are both pretty dire though imho

I wouldn't notice the difference between English teas, but I like Indian teas, so I could tell the difference between these, at least.

I work in a hospital ward, and the tea bags we get sent up from the kitchens are horrible compared to Tetley / Punjana / Typhoo etc. We haven't been able to figure out what the difference is though (apart from the whole cheaper thing, obviously, but surely tea is tea is tea!?!)

Tea bags are full of sweepings off the floor. Use leaf tea and a strainer to get a real cup of tea.

What is it with tea bags? They taste horrible compared to real tea. They are probably used by people that like instant coffee. :(

I don't like tea bags for the same reason, loose tea and a strainer every time. Don't forget that the water where you live can make the tea taste different too. Shop around as there are so many teas to choose from, you may be surprised at what is out there.

I use Typhoo bags, I have still got 4 boxes of 100's in the cupboard dated best before Aug 2009 and they still taste ok.
Mrs Scorpio uses those pyramid ones.....you know, the ones that the monkeys drink.....Hmm, wonder if that's why she's got hairy hands :D

Most of my tea drinking is during the week at work so it's not really practical to be messing around with tea strainers (I can imagine my colleagues reactions if I requested proper leaf tea all the time!)

I don't really like coffee full stop, I probably have about 6 cups a year.

I forgot about Typhoo, I like those too. &I have tried Yorkshire Tea and that's also nice (not sure if it's to do with the hard water angle though)

If asked what drink I would take to a desert island (apart from water) it would be tea. Punjana tea bags are the best.
Mind you I would need milk and sweetners as well. :D
