I am a huge fan of Top Gear but the "slope" comment was just bad. Either they didn't realise it had racist connotations or (more likely in my view) they thought they could sneak it in without being noticed.
Either way, poor judgement and it added nothing to the show.

Or, they knew exactly what they were doing, and were actively seeking headlines so Top Gear fans can have a good chortle at the racism, then make comments about 'PC gone mad'.
Rather like when they did all that stuff about Mexico.

However, being one of your "Top Gear fans", that "racist comment" would have passed me by had it not been for the negative comments in the media raising it as an issue.
They shouldn't have said it but now "this ( Somi Guha) sad unknown" has managed to propel a fairly obscure term straight into the public domain where, no doubt, a certain element of society will gratefully pick up on it. Brilliant work. Not.
Some people are too quick to jump on the racist card, which deflects away the genuine racist issues, a bit like the boy crying wolf and it waters down what is a serious issue
And the relevance of that two-year old news item was what exactly?
Or are you surprised that many of the jams & tailbacks are staged? Or that you expect TG to simply cause traffic jams and the affected motorists, cyclists etc would not bat an eyelid or complain to the BBC?

I believe the link was just posted because the poster thought it was new. It appeared in the Most Read section of the BBC News website.
Because TG have caved under threat of legal action and say they now "regret" making the remark.
That is just to keep people happy and is meaningless. Gordon Brown was fond of that type of apology. You don't actually say that you are sorry just that you are sorry that people took offence.

I thought it was new but then noticed the date.
Ah, ok.
There have been remarks in other threads regarding the Most read section, and how stories from some years ago seem to appear there. Definitely something not right.

I suppose it's just done on pageviews.
I read a few years ago that for some reason groups of people were bumping old stories up the list but as there was already a Top Gear story on the list, I'm not surprised there were a load of click-throughs.

And? That story is from two years ago.

I had no idea it had racial connotations either.
Sometimes, it is just possible to not know.
Because the new fuss about the name of his dog made them remember it.:D

I agree with that.
Anyway, SO WHAT!

Catch old Clarkson by the toe.
If he says 'sorry' let him go,
