Psychological horror recommendations

Hi,

I am looking for a film like The Shining or We Need to Talk About About Kevin which are quite thought-provoking, get your heart going, are very psychological based, are quite artistic as such and quite subtle.

These are two of my favourite horror films and I really want something else to watch in this kind of vein!

Thanks

Funny Games is good, but not sure if it's what your looking for, good tension ( i would call it more physiological thriller more that a horror ) I love the shining as well

    what about Misery ?

You could try The Mothman Prophecies, it has an air of unease and menace, rather than OTT shock tactics, throughout and is (allegedly) based on real events. I tend to think of it as the movie The X-Files movie should have been.

I may look into that, thank you!

Have a look for some Asian horror films. Especially Japanese or Korean. Those films quite frequently deal with that side of horror.

I watched one last night for the very first time called 'Strange Circus', made in 2005.
It was very good too. Very unsettling film which reminded me of David Lynch films and dealt with dark subject matter.

You might like to try Visitor Q, Audition, Hansel and Gretel (2007), The Housemaid (2010) and Thirst (2009) if you haven't yet.

Yes I've seen Hansel and Gretel, Thirst and Audition.
I'm intending to watch Visitor Q as I have heard good things about it.
Thanks for the recommendation for The Housemaid though. That's one I wasn't aware of and will look into.

    Hard Candy?

Not sure that's really horror, maybe thriller. Worth checking out though.

    Maybe Rosemary's Baby? Identity?

See my thread posted a little further down in this forum about The Babadook.
I think you'd enjoy that as it is really thought provoking and plays on the idea of a bogeyman, but yeah it's totally psychological.

Magic might be worth a look, directed by Richard Attenborough and starring Anthony Hopkins as a ventriloquist with a very sinister dummy.

No, it isn't. Frailty revolves around a man (Matthew McConaughey) who confesses that his father was a serial killer.

You were probably thinking of Session 9.

1408 is a decent one. I don't know if the original Carrie counts as a psychological horror. I guess it's more of an entertaining revenge story. But yeah, the Shining is just pure creepy.

Pacific Heights is another good one with Michael Keaton in a bad guy role as a tenant from Hell http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100318/?ref_=nv_sr_1
