To the power and to the dish, yes! Or it has no way of getting to you. You can switch it to standby though as it is still active and will spring to life and download the update when they decide to send it.
I would imagine that if you always leave it off, when you do turn it on in a couple of months when the download is on the forced download stream, it will do it then or when you decide to do a forced update.
And just to add - even if it's powered off overnight it will still get the update. That happened to me when the new EPG was shipped. My box is powered off between midnight and 4pm (there's a timer on the wall socket). I got the new EPG around 6pm I think. The box just rebooted in the middle of play back and when it came back there was the new EPG.
So no, the machine doesn't have to be on 24/7 to get the update but yes, it does need power and a signal at point

i have had the samr problem with one of my amstrad's its only 10 days old and its gone into stand by twice and a full reset and auto standby is turned off it went off at 6 am
No update on my Thomson box yet.... (unless I missed it?)
I suspect that this time the remaining Thomson boxes will be the last to get the update, so don't hold your breath!
As a Thomson owner myself I'm actually rather glad of this after reading some of the horror stories posted about box malfunctions after this update!
As long as we do get it eventually, and the bugs are ironed out, I'm happy to wait.

I also own a thomson and am more then happy with the software I have, updates normally always result in problems, my current set up is working fine.
Update has trashed my parents PACE box. They've had to do a full reset and lost all of their recordings. They are particularly gutted about losing Aquaravision, that they used to have on as a soothing background (I'd just turn the TV off myself!). I can't see it on Sky Arts any more. My 1Tb and old Thomo HD box haven't had the update and as I can't get Sky BB I don't really want it if it's going to trash my boxes. I've got tonnes of stuff on my 1Tb and I want it to stay that way!
Got update last night in my amstrad 890, anytime has turned itself on now (i had it disabled) and now in settings screen has a new bit saying broadband connection on /off .
There are no major problems with Samsung nor Amstrad Sky HD Boxes,
yes there may be glitches on less than 1% and a few people on here have posted problems but are they in any way as bad as the terrible Pace & Thomson boxes... NO!!!
Just ring Sky and get a replacement box if any glitch can't be fixed manually with a reboot and software update. Obviously I woulnt suggest a reboot or update on a regular basis but once in a while van be put down as maintenance.
Any major problems and a complaint may be needed. Never know you may get a shiny reburb of an old Thomson, so be careful what u wish for and complain about!!!

The thomsons have been removed from the supply chain. Whilst there may be a couple out there as van stock, we have been told to return them so that they can be scrapped. It's caused a few problems for us too as there are quite a few people who's hd is connected via component leads and we are being left with no alternative but to connect via scart lead.
My Thomson appeared to 'phone home' around 8pm tonight, which I've never seen it do before, possibly a sign that it's ready to update? I always thought that they phoned home during the middle of the night, Anyway, if it is, I hope I'm not subjected to all the issues that have been reported, as the box has been rock solid ever since the PSU was upgraded. (Apart from that, the box is standard, so fingers crossed there won't be any planner problems!)

The software is delivered via the satellite, phoning home has nothing to do with software. Although, I admit, 8pm is a particularly customer unfriendly time for your HD box to contact the mother ship.
I had my first phantom "No Satellite Signal" error in months this morning. Very odd one though, in the services window, both inputs were locked (in the past when I have had this issue, input 2 is unlocked). Also, the box crashed earlier this week (on Wednesday). It has not done this since I replaced the PSU (for a Sarcure one) almost 2 1/2 yeasr ago. I reckon the new software is sat on my box awaiting the trigger signal. I will do a forced update later today to erase it and buy myself a little bit of time (I am not a Sky BB subscriber so have no interest in the crappy SD only Anytime+).

I'll cancel my sub before I'd ever have an Amstrad forced upon me.
Same feeling about IBM now Hitachi HDD's, once bitten twice shy.
A planner rebuild has sorted most of the slowness though it is still not as quick as previous versions.
