Not a particularly nice person, either to her husband or child, a long history of substance abuse, ultimately leading to her death at the age of 31, in 1978. Is it really that long ago?

A lot of artists aren't very nice but as we will never meet them it probably doesn't matter. She had an amazing voice, Fairport Live Convention is still a great favourite of mine.

Superb voice regardless of her demons. Another superb voice I find is that of Melanie!
Bizarrely I heard her singing (Melanie this is) peace will come on TV recently and was struck by how she sounded like Amy MacDonald.... Only really on that song though.

But her death wasn't through her own stupidity. She's suspected to have died because of a brain tumour. Despite that she was a troubled soul, and she was known to be something of an alcoholic in her last few years, so she probably wouldn't have lived a long life anyway.

Love this Joni Mitchell song she did in her early days with Fairport Convention.

You mean, the writings of someone who wrote a book about her?

Hmm..

The Wiki account includes memories of her mother.

So I guess that's "one all."

We never will know the true facts, just second hand opinions.

You can prefer which ever version you like, it's all history now.

Sandy Denny had simply the greatest voice of any female singer I've heard. She was also an excellent songwriter - writing 'Who know where the time goes' when she was about 18. There's no doubt she had her demons, but it isn't true to say she was not a nice person. One only has to hear the affection with which she is remembered by those who knew her - Simon Nicol of Fairport Convention and Richard Thompson frequently sing WKWTTG and never fail to mention Sandy. She was a great loss to British music.

BTW, on the subject of Fairport Convention, their new album 'Myths and heroes' is a real triumph - not bad for a band in their 48th year!

To add to my comments above, there's a review of her biography here - http://thebluemoment.com/2015/03/the-story-of-sandy-denny/ which makes a few interesting observations. Long time friend Ralph McTell says “She would provoke — push people to the very limit at times, which sounds like she was a nasty person, but she wasn’t. People would take it because they loved her. I don’t know anyone who didn’t love her.” and the reviewer, who worked for Island Records at the time says of Sandy - 'Sandy was loved within the company for her warmth of her personality as well as for her artistry, she was not biddable. Nor, in those days, were real artists supposed to be.'

Most people who knew Sandy say nice things about her and remember her with great fondness.

I always take the recollections of people, about those no longer around, with a pinch of salt. It's entirely down to their perceptions. If they want to write a positive account of someone, they'll concentrate on those factors and vice versa.
You'd have to be entirely impartial, to give an accurate account, very difficult if you knew that person.
There's good and bad in everyone, so we'll never get a true picture.
