Why wouldn't they be? Don't they just have restricted trading hours?

About as many as were open on Monday and Tuesday this week, I expect. But you're really best to check with the individual shops.

In England and Wales - yes. Bank holidays are big money spinners for the shops.

Scotland - less so as they take Hogmanay more seriously.

I live in a rural market town and most of our shops still don't open on an ordinary Sunday let alone Bank Holidays. Tescos, Sainsburys and Boots do, but not much else. Having been a city dweller previously I think it's quite nice actually.

I wish we had a decent train sevice though.

Hogmanay is on Friday (tomorrow). We're not that bad we can't open a shop on Monday.:D

Retail workers may be made of sterner stuff, but most of us in Scotland won't have recovered from the New Year until Wednesday.

Yes... it will be the last shopping day before the VAT increase on Tuesday.
