We are almost halfway through this decade. What has defined this period and how will it be remembered?

On the technology side Twitter has become more popular than Facebook.

YouTube is still going strong with the rise of the blogger, many of whom are teen/geek icons earning a living from this full time.

Smartphones and tablets are more popular than the traditional laptop and desktop PC for recreational use.

Netflix and Spotify are changing the way we (legally) view content, with streaming being included in the music charts this year.

Love them or hate them the self service supermarket checkout is prominent in our supermarkets, especially the small convenience chains such as Sainsbury's Local and Tecsos express which has exploded in numbers this decade.

It will be remembered for the Ipad in 2010.

    Lady Gaga

She was bigger in 2009 than anytime since.

Can't wait until people start saying "the 10's", as a reference point for the decade.

This decade so far has been defined by:

Technology applications becoming more advanced (Virtual Reality, Prototype driverless cars, talking watches and mobile phones).

    The Hung Parliament

The Internet has become an all-more powerful force, by legitimising 'internet tv'.

And, just scrapping in, the Orangutan that was granted human rights. That will have further implications going forward.

The emergence of the term "going forward". And "gifting".

A government more right wing than Thatcher.

    Dubstep goes mainstream.

The decline of human to human interaction due to the rise of human to screen to screen to human contact.

I really, really, REALLY hope it doesn't have that kind of staying power. I've had full blown arguments over dinner with friends who think it's better than the 90's golden age of The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Beauty & The Beast etc..

Technology. Political correctness. The consumer becomes so accustomed to consumer culture that thet themselves become a product (YouTube is basically an internet consumerist whorehouse where people shove content in your face on an hourly basis in exchange for likes - which bumps up advertising earnings).

Culturally it's hard to say. You can't really know until you have some distance from the period.

Economically and politically: awful and UKIP, respectively.

Miliband's awkward portrayal of a leader
    Political correctness
    Censorship
    Mass surveillance
Outrage over Top Gear and specifically Jeremy Clarkson

Due to games like Angry Birds and (ick) Candy Crush Saga, freemium games are now seemingly more popular than full-price games. (King apparently made nearly $800 MILLION from IAPs for CCS in the first half of 2014.)

Five years (so far) of doom and gloom for those who don't have a decent wage coming in.

    FTTC connections.

    SSD popularity.

The film industry aggressively going after torrent sites that hosted torrent files that allowed people to illegally download copyrighted content (because superfast broadband connections were becoming popular).

Add to that, 4G mobile connectivity.

I think Obama will be the poster boy/image of this decade.

What do people think of the music and fashion in this decade and how it will stand compared to others?
