Imagine if Jackanory was set free from its childish shackles. What beautifully funny tales about life in the twenty first century would it unleash upon the world? Surely the best bedtime stories for the big kids in all of us… so make yourself comfortable and prepare to laugh and be entranced by a dose of Crackanory.

It was a bit odd  Quite funny in a way, but also weird with a kind of "This could actually happen" quality (loved the payoff), so how can it be parodied?

Seems like a clumsy update of Tales of the Unexpected (Roald Dahl) to me.

The 2nd story was very Dahl-like imo :)

Happened on this totally by accident. Jackanory meets Tales of the Unexpected. Loved it - totally appealed to my sense of humour, and my sense of nostalgia, but then I probably am a bit odd!

Maybe I'll give the 2nd episode a try.

    I loved it too.

I thought the second one was best. Sally Philips had the tone of voice and the manner spot on. Memories of being young again, listening to a Grimm fairy tale.

You could believe it happening in this day and age.

I think they are a bit too light to be compared to Tales of the Unexpected. It would be good if they were more like that or even Tales from the Crypt.

I wonder if they thought of putting them on singularly, say after a 40minute programme to complete the hour but thought that they wouldn't get an audience so decided to put two together to make a full programme?

    Loved it.

Could have seen Sally's story as a "Tale of the Unexpected".

I think the Jack Dee one was best. Made me laugh.

Was the dog in the second one the same one from the Harvey adverts?

    I thought that too. :)
Could quite easily see something like Jack's story happening in the age we live in (maybe not as extreme but you get the idea) :o

    It was okay.
The stories were a bit weak I thought.
If you think about it there wasn't much to them as stories.

Man writes insulting tweet to a Bieber type celebrity.
    Gets fan backlash.
Bieber lookalikes PR team make him apologise.
    He gets on the news.
    End of story.

    Rich philanthropic nice guy dies.
Has himself stuffed and keeps his stuffed corpse around his family.
The corpse has voice recordings which play every seven and a half minutes.
    He/It starts to annoy them.
His family get sick of him/it and try to get rid of the animated corpse.
    They finally get rid.
Turns out that it was all part of his plan because he was so nice he wanted to go without them grieving over him.

They're just not really much in the way of stories.
The original Jackanory probably had better stories.

It's a good idea. I just wish it was better.

Didn't some comedian several years ago do something sort of like this where he he narrated some short stories he'd written which were animated?

    I like it, it's something different :)

It's a lot better than the stories that Paul Ross used to read out on The Paranormal Channel.

The parts where he was reading out the point of view of a woman being made love to was hilarious :D

I think it was Charlie Brooker that featured this on his show.

I wonder if they've thought of having a regular cast of players.

They've had some good guest stars in but it could be good to have the same cast every week acting out the stories.
