Games You Like That Don't Seem To Get Made Anymore

Unfortunately there do seem to be some games that were big in the past, but that don't seem to get made anymore, either due to being considered obsolete, or just by being out of fashion. It's a shame because I think there are many good game genres that are in this limbo, and I just wandered what games people want to play, but can't as they're not being made

Here are the game types I miss most

Serious tactical shooters: I think the king of these was Rainbow Six (Police Quest SWAT is also an honorable mention), where you had to plan a mission, kit yourself out and execute it knowing that one mess up could end with you dead or the mission failed. It was quite realistic, with 1 hit kills and a lot of time was just spent on clearing buildings room by room.

The Rainbow Six games do still exist but they've become Hollywood-ized and dumbed down with you fast roping into shoot outs in Las Vegas Casinos. I can't think of any realistic special forces shooters now.

1st person Space Combat Sims X-Wing, Tie Fighter, Wing Commander were the most famous examples, games where you could get in the seat of a starfighter. But games of this type don't really get made anymore sadly. Freespace 2 and X-wing Alliance were the last real hurrahs of this genre in my opinion, and that's going back to 1999!

I'd give anything for a new Star Wars space sim.

The good news is that I think now is a good time for a lot of 'dead' genres to come back. Kickstarter is resurrecting franchises and the success of titles like X-Com have brought back some old school mechanics (that isometric turn based style was out of fashion for years). But anyway if there are any games that don't seem to get made anymore feel free to list them

Should add Micro Machines-esque top down racers. They do get made on mobile platforms (Reckless Racing 2 is good). But console versions dont seem to get made anymore which is a shame, as they're great multiplayer titles

LMA Manager, the best football manager game that I played on, shame that Codemasters stop making this game since 2007 version as I think it will do well if they bring it back.

Ditto with Ultimate Soccer Manger. I think in the case of football management games 'Football manager' has essentially cornered the market. It has so much market share that others don't bother to compete anymore. I know EA have a management game, and there is still a Championship manager, but there are nowhere near as many as their used to be.

Motorstorm RC on PS3 / Vita is the most recent example I can think of.

I liked isometric games but now I'm showing my age!

Something I really miss are the more traditional 2D shmups, non-danmaku twitch-based shmups like the games from Toaplan, Raizing and Psikyo. These days it's all bullet hell, I've grown to really enjoy that style but it's disproportionate how many of these shmups are released.

2D scrolling beat'em ups, while there are some excellent modern day examples and you could say they're making a bit of a come back with recent releases such as Dragon's Crown, Phantom Breaker: Battlegrounds, Charlie Murder and the upcoming Foul Play but these still remain games developed by niche, small or indie studios. I want a new big budget Streets of Rage or Guardian Heroes. If the game is quality I'll happily pay full price.

I also miss the Space Sim/Trading games, you would of thought there would be more of these around, Elite was such a popular franchise back in the day. There was Darkstar One: Broken Alliance which was ported to the 360, a great port (1080p60) and it all works really well, but there is a serious lack of this genre, a new Elite would be huge on consoles.

Have you heard of Takedown: Red Sabre? It is a Kickstarter game from a guy who worked on those old Rainbow Six titles, doing a new game in that format again.

No i hadn't heard of that, yes this seems just what I was after! I believe a new Elite has been funded on Kickstarter too. That's a good thing about crowd funding, a lot of these forgotten games get a new lease of life.

I agree, consoles are badly missing a management game.

The shift to x86 infrastructure from Microsoft and Sony should in theory allow easy conversions. I believe SI Games have said they are looking into the possibility of FM2014 for the next gen.

I wish Cinemaware were still around. Seeing what they got out of the Amiga makes me wonder what they could do with current tech

I agree about Space Sims, my favourite games when I was younger were the Wing Commander series, and with StarLancer being my last fix then I truly miss this genre.

I also loved the point and click games, but the original 2D versions, Monkey Islands, The Dig, Full Throttle, Broken Sword, Flight of the Amazon Queen, Teen Agent, Beneath the Steel Sky, etc I still have the games but it would be nice to have new ones :)

Actua soccer on the ps1. Not everyone's cup of tea but I enjoyed them. Also there was a football game on the ps2 with Rio Ferdinand on the cover. Think it was maybe called this is football ?. Was a great game and in my opinion better than FIFA and pes.

I might be wrong but I thought This is Football continued on as PES.

Edit: My bad, that was International Superstar Soccer that continued as PES.

There's a pretty good, free, fan made Wing Commander available on PC. I don't have the link to hand but Google should pick it up.

Also, there still are a fair few new point and click adventure games on PC, they just don't seem to get heavily promoted...

Mini Motor Racing Evo is one recent game I can think of. Again, PC but they're still being made somewhere.

I'm hoping Dragon's Crown is a hybrid of Golden Axe and a Role play type game.

I was going to suggest 2d shooters are still being made, but I have to agree they are all a hail of bullets on the screen recently.

I miss the glory days of Capcom, Taito and Konami.

Games which don't spoon feed you with what to do next all the time. The original 1996 Tomb Raider for instance - I spent an age working out one or two of the puzzles.

I cant believe this genre hasn't been revived for mobile devices, with some tweaks the touch screen could be ideal for these type of games.

Im not sure they're there yet but I think sadly that light gun shooters are close to be being put on the scrap heap.

The last significant LGS games I can think of we're HOTD overkill and Time Crisis Razing storm (which both under performed commercially) Sega did release HOTD 4 as a PSN title, and RE: Umbrella Chronicles got released last year on PS3......but these are mainly enhanced ports of the old arcade/wii version.

I seem to remember when the ps3 first launched . There was talk of another football game separate to FIFA and pes being launched. Does anyone know what happened too it?

    Oops... just saw this :o

In terms of point & click adventures a lot of the older ones are available on Steam and in April Anna (Extended Edition) was released, showing that along with Gone Home that style of game is alive and kicking

    er....https://robertsspaceindustries.com/

$15m raised so far and still going - a space sim by the guy who made Wing Commander. Contribute to support proper game development on PC.

Also XRebirth - out in November if you prefer single player.
