Favourite Actress of the past?

What the title suggests, mine are...

Faye Dunaway in the 60s/70s, was anyone better in that period? Bonnie and Clyde, Chinatown and Network. Amazing movies!

Diane Keaton in Annie Hall and Reds.. love those movies.

Jane Fonda in They Shoot Horses Don't They? and Klute!

I know they're all still working today, but nothing will compare to their glory days. Especially now with the exception of Diane they look like waxwork figures of themselves.

Obviously going further back there is great ones like the Hepburns, Davis etc but I couldn't pinpoint just a couple good movies from them, the majority are (not including Davis in her later years of course).

Ingrid Bergman and Judy Garland are probably my very favourites out of Old Hollywood. :)

Judy was good for a musical or two, but I've never thought she was that great an actress. More an entertainer.

I can never remember the names of them all, but Margaret Lockwood, Gene Tierney, Phyllis Calvert etc
and although I hate to say so, I do believe Bette Davis was a good actress (even if a little OTT)
sounds like a standard cop-out - but she did appear to be amusing at times.

I like Ingrid Bergman and Gloria Graeme (great in 'In a Lonely Place'), but my favourite is Gene Tierney. 'Laura' and 'Leave Her To Heaven' are never far from my dvd player and other films like 'The Ghost and Mrs Muir', 'The Razor's Edge', 'The Shanghai Gesture', and 'Whirlpool' are all good too.

Here is Gene at her most beautiful - in Thunder Birds,1942:

Here is her intro scene from Leave Her to Heaven, 1945:

Ingrid Bergman. I think I fell in love with her when I saw For Whom The Bell Tolls.

Thats a good one, she was such a natural child actress compared to many.

Do they have to be dead? Mine is Bridget Fonda. She's neither dead nor particularly old but I haven't seen her in anything for ages - very underrated.

I guess that you haven't seen A Star is Born, one of the greatest performances given by any actress ever!
