The Time Lords are (were) Uber Telepaths. They're capable of forming telepathic bonds with their sentient time machines, If they can have psychic paper, I don't see why they can't have other telepathically controlled equipment. It'd actually make less sense if they had a bog standard tool that works like the average B&Q item. I'd love the Doctor to have other unique items in his tool kit.
My problem is how frequently and sometimes lazily it's used. I've no interest in time wasted opening locked doors etc, we only have 45 minutes, get the screwdriver out. However it should be used for a limited amount of tasks. The Doctor should have a scanner, that's separate from the TARDIS, but perhaps it should be another tool?
The screwdriver shouldn't be used as a plot resolution, merely to move the plot on.
