  Try reinstalling java.Have you got the allow animated emoticons box ticked too ?

  Go to the menu on the top right hand side of your signed in MSN page and go to: Tools> Options> Messages and check the boxes 'Show emoticons' and 'Show custom emoticons' then: Apply> OK, close down and restart messenger and all should be working again.
