If a team wins promotion to the Premier League they know very well that they will be guaranteed a certain amount of income, even if they are only in the league for one year. However the Premier League choose to give out that distribution is up to them. Regardless of if it comes over 5 years (at present) or in a lorry in one afternoon in cash, a team still receives the same amount of money.

Manchester United also receive more money than Leicester City. But I wouldn't call it unfair.

    Per Sale:

"The Premier League have provided around 400 pages of explanation to broadcast regulators Ofcom to make their case for keeping the full £5.1 billion from their domestic TV rights sale.

The lengthy document, which had PL chiefs burning the midnight oil to meet Friday’s deadline, is the league’s official response to an Ofcom probe into their TV auction process.............."

Great to see this thread back on the front page of the Broadcasting forum. This issue clearly has a long way left to run; good news for the lawyers.

I would like to see the breakdown of money given away to FL clubs

Hope it is not still these unfair parachute payments which means if you get relegated you have a huge influx of money to make sure you get back !!!

At the moment the relegated clubs get 80 million :o

And they are in the same League with clubs like Bournemouth and Brentford who's Budget is probably about 5 million !!!

    Oh no they aren't. ;-)

Sky have won the digital highlights rights for the next cycle. However as part of the deal The Times and The Sun will continue to provide these near live clips as they do at present.

Comes across as sky having a total monopoly on premier league coverage which is bad thing. Time that the monopoly was broke up and more evenly distributed. But we know that aint going to happen such is the stranglehold that sky have

I must have imagined BT winning the rights to 42 games from 2016/17.

Had a feeling Sky would be in for those rights - they compliment the app offerings and will be a useful tool when Sky launch their mobile service on O2's spectrum next year. In this day and age they are arguably a more useful set of rights than the extended highlights rights.

Presuming the deal is the same as News UK's previous one it will mean Sky can serve instant highlights from BT's live matches to Sky Sports customers online.

Worth noting that there is still no further word from OFCOM re their investigation into the auction process - OFCOM last provided an update on 23 March - see post 2368.

The PL reportedly sent a lengthy document to OFCOM in late May - see post 2378.

    Indeed Sky suggesting they have exclusive rights from 16/17, from their article;

'In February, Sky Sports secured exclusive rights to the Premier League from 2016/17 to 2018/19'

I'm sure BT will have something to say about Sky claiming to have exclusive rights from the following season. I wonder if they'll use this as a way of trying to retain customers now they have lost European club games to BT.

How do they manage to get away with being dishonest?

Note that there's a difference between "exclusive rights" and "the exclusive rights".

Sky have exclusive rights because the games they show won't be shown live on any other UK channel; they don't have the exclusive rights because BT will also show live matches.

I wonder if Sky Sports News will mention the Champions League as much this season as they have the previous seasons...

So could BT claim to have exclusive rights?

Yes, but not the exclusive rights.

I agree with you grammatically, but for either of the broadcasters to use that phrase is exceptionally misleading.

They cannot ignore it but they will not be over hyping it

    What's the definition of clips?

Sky could show almost continuous clips of the BT live games while showing minimal clips of Sky live games.

Sky are far too powerful these days. Stranglehold on live sports rights and now on highlights packages.

42 games is just scraps for BT.

No, that is crap as then we (the customer) have to subscribe to all sorts to get the damn coverage and costs us even more! Like now if if want all the games available I have to pay Sky and BT!

If the Premier League were not so greedy surely the best way to do this would be regardless of what platform you are on you can get all the games. So basically Sky, BT and Virgin (even maybe BBC or ITV could show some?) could show all the games and their customers would just pay accordingly. Would be a lot easier for us but not sure if it can be done?

Of course it can be done, but the product is only a valuable commodity on an 'exclusive' basis - on that reason alone do broadcasters pay such vast sums. If the Premier League adopted your approach then the value would crash which would not be in their members' interests.

I imagine the length of the clips (quite short) is very clearly defined in the contract but either way I think the ability to be able to say to Sky customers that they can have the goals from BT's games sent to their phones almost instantly will be something Sky will be hammering home this time next year.

Details of how The Sun Goals app currently works here: http://thenextweb.com/uk/2013/08/16/with-the-english-premier-league-season-almost-underway-heres-a-look-at-the-suns-mobile-highlights-app/

BT Sport has a pretty decent portfolio of rights.

Out of interest I noticed there were tabs for UEFA Champions league and Europa league on Sun Goals app. Have News UK gained rights for in game video clips.

Not sure they will be Scraps of games as you put it, they have some pretty decent games in that 42 and also have Chelsea Man Utd at Christmas, sorry not scraps at all and on top of their Champion/Europa League coverage and the FA Cup it does look pretty good.
Im also struggling to think why they would be interested in a highlight package?

For the three midweek rounds, could sky do an online programme with all goals/ clips as they occur or will they be prevented from doing a show around the clips?
